Hey,

My camera is over two years old now, and I was wondering if it's worth upgrading to something like an S9500 or 9600? The specs look great in comparison but if I was to part ex my current camera, I can't help wondering if I could get one of the older model DSLRs for the same price, like a Canon 350d or something.

Is it worth going from prosumer to prosumer?

I bought a s9500 at the end of 2005, when it first came out. Love the camera and feel that its the best you can get before going to digital SLR. I used it extensively for a year and have just recently upgraded to a Canon 30D. The only real reason for this is the ability to change lenses and the speed that the camera is ready to reshoot. I do a lot of children and families and found that the 9500 was just a little too slow between photos and I was missing great shots. The 9500 has a great macro and super macro and also a really good zoom. Also a good 10 megapixels. I think it's a great camera for the price and if you dont think you will be wanting to go to a digital SLR it deserves your consideration. However if you think that you maybe want a digital SLR you may feel that like me you will outgrow it in a year. So decide where you want to be in a year or so and decide from there.

Well i tend to drift in and out of photography, really only gusing my camera these days when travelling or during the Summer/Autumn months. I suppose with an SLR there are lens prices to consider and with a part exchange I could get a good deal on the 9500...

Thanks for your advice.

You may have a hard time finding the S9500, the S9600 has replaced it now. Not a lot difference between the two, I think the main difference is a larger LCD screen and face detection on the S9600.

I'm very happy with my S9500. Been a great camera to learn the basics with.

As i said in your other thread I used to have the 5100.

I had been looking at the S6000 and S9xxx series.

What drew me in was the barrel controlled zoom and the manual focus ring that could be used in MF mode. The flip up screen is a plus for macro studio work. From what i understand the S9600 vs the S6000 the S9600 not only has face detection but a 100% view crop in the center of the scren for manual focusing just like my powershot.

I loved the barrel controlled zoom and focus ring as well. It has AV and TV priority settings which work really well. A very professional looking camera for a non professional price.
