How many people want to or have Photography as their proffesion? And how many people consider this being another hobby? Personally, I am aspiring towards becoming a proffesional.

If I was younger and had found photography when I was trying to decide what to do in school, I probably would have chosen it over my current trade. As much as I love photography, I have too much time invested in my real profession to consider studying and persuing a photographic career.

I predict that you'll be famous photographer someday David. You're certainly starting out with the right attitude and approach. Keep up the great work.

Why ruin a perfectly good hobby :) I'll go pro when I retire, in say, 30 years.

Unfortunately, getting paid to take photos means that you have to render what the client wants and not what YOU want. Most times the pictures are quite boring. I have been working on a photo of a dentist's office for weeks.

"That shadow bothers me. . .Can you take another one from this angle? . .What if we try this instead?"

These situations are mild compared to some of the wedding gigs you can get stuck with. Don't turn pro.

I'm working towards professional. Also going to submitt my first portfolio to a gallery this fall for consideration. I'm not expecting them to accept it and want me in the gallery but I am doing it for the professional feedback. I already know the gallery I am submitting it to already is interested in the work I have been doing with the artist, so I figure letting them see the raw work from that project as well as some of the other stuff I have done might help to point me in a direction to go on my own.

I wouldn't say I want it as my profession. I'd love it as a sideline. I've been shooting portraits of my sister in law who will be senior this year. I'm hoping by the end of the summer I'll be able to send her off to school with some really excellent photos. My "advertising" campaign. I'm waiting for someone to ask me to shoot their wedding. I've done it once, pre-DPC. It wasn't very good either. I wish I could do it now. But if I can get a couple of freebies under my belt, maybe I can advertise "budget" wedding photography. I need to do some free ones to start a portfolio. Ok, maybe not free, "Pay by the print" might be a better description. I think budget wedding photography, if I could get adept, has a lot of market in this area.

Okay, okay.... I'll stop already - BB

Try doing the wedding all in digital for a set price to cover your time only like maybe $75 and in turn they give you a release so you can use the wedding photos for your portfolio. Give them a copy of the photos you took so they can print them out at there convience. You got photos for your portfolio and made a little money at the same time.

I did something very similar for a friend who's daughter is a senior this coming year. I did over 100 photos of the girl in 4 outfits edited them and charged her $30 for the cd. Worked to cause she showed them off to her friends and I just booked 3 more for this month, at a price of $75 per sitting with a cd to be picked up a week later. It isn't a lot of money, but I am building a portfolio at the same time.

There is just something about having your photos done digitally that teens seem to love.

I wish that were the case over in england, lol. A girl asked me to do some photos of her and some of her friends for a part of her school project, and when they saw each photo they just started insulting themselves, lol. "Oh I hate that freckle! Oh no, look at that makeup! It's awful! What was I thinking when I did my hair?"

After I touched them up a lot on the computer, they seemed to like them a lot more. I hate looking at photos of myself too, I guess it's a British thing.

Oh believe me it isn't a British thing. I think photos of me are aweful most of the time. Let a photo be taken of me without makeup and my hair being down and I can freak out at times.

Actually, I believe Issac (6 yrs) is the youngest DPC'er! :)

No one likes photos of themselves.. ordinarilly. Save the photos - you'll like them much better in 5 or so years, and you'll look back and be glad you have it.

I am trying to be at a professional level in photography. It is something I have been able to do around the children's schedules. I have been getting a few more Clients lately - (Those are a couple of examples) - and like I mentioned in the other thread, I do portraits part-time (really part-time right now as I am only working at the studio some weekends thru the summer. Come September, I will be picking up more hours with the kids in school). Cool thing is, people are requesting me now. Makes me feel good.

It depends for whom youre working for. In the case of a dentist's office, youre absolutley correct. Youre not taking photos for passions or desire or of will, youre doing it for buisness purposes. But supposing you get a job with National Geographic! now theres a publication that lets you take mostly the photos that you want. photos for other people to enjoy, not to look at pictures of teeth. once again, just my opinion. and wedings are just how people start off, to establish a reputation and get money they'll need.

I am going to school for graphic design, which incorporates photography sometimes. In this field you are at an advantage if you are an experienced photographer and can use your own work instead of stock images. So I guess you could say it will most likely be part of my profession.

It seems like its taking me forever to start school but I am aspiring to be a professional. A few ribbons to boost the confidence, a few sold prints and a wedding gig to boot. Hopefully it all pays off in the end.
