Seeing the insect scores thread and a cell phone thread tonight reminded me of something I heard on Art Bell's radio show the other day (I listen on rare occasion) - he mentioned some scientific reports that cell phones may be causing interference with bees migration patterns, resulting in them never making it back to their homes and this has a huge adverse affect on crops. He mentioned a loss 60% of the bee population on the west coast of the U.S. and 70% on the east coast. I may have my numbers a little off, but they were pretty staggering.

So, has anyone heard of this? I haven't heard Al Gore mention this, so it must not be that important. ;-) I'm really just curious because it sounds very serious, but I have not heard of this before.

Of course, it wouldn't be the first time I heard something alarming on Art Bell's show that I never heard before - last time I listened I was worried for weeks about the impending invasion of middle earth beings.

It was on some news program last week, I think split between the Today Show and NBC Nightly News.

I think that's in the Terms of Use. ;-)

...so I am thinking beekeepers can trade their smoke dispensers for cell phones?

You talking about the one that was just like a couple of months or so ago? That the british ex-SOS guy was talking about, that was supposed to happen within just a few days??? If so, yeah, I heard that one too. Hmmm, as far as I know, they havn't invaded yet, but I'm usually out of the loop on things anyway :-)

LOL! I thought I was just making that up. I've heard things on that show about alien invasions, middle earth people, ghosts, etc. but not specifically about middle earth people invasions.

Hmmm, middle earth...maybe that's where the bees are going - they can't get good cell phone reception down there.

hehe, well, as you know, I'm driving at work every night, late, and Coast to Coast is GREAT entertainment. :-)
I really like when they have the Time Traveler shows. And you know, Art is only on like on Sunday nights (I think), it's George Noory most of the rest of the time. Still the same show though :-)

Definitely a great show to listen to ...in the middle of the night ...driving around ...alone. :D

So do cellphones interfere with hornets and wasps also?

It's very troubling and has been going on for a long time. I was working on a tribute to the missing bees for the insect challenge, but it didn't turn out right. Maybe I'll post my setup in an outtakes thread.

If I were a betting person I'd put my money on the non-repellent pesticides that are being used on food crops and yards. There was a recent House Agricultural Panel hearing on C-Span with the beekeepers pleading for increased funding to study the problem, but I only got to see a portion of it.
