under the advance editing rules it says that the texture doesn't need to be taken during the duration of this challenge. I have a texture I want to use that is from a picture I shot a long time ago. It was just a picture of rust. The file is long gone now, b/c I used it to make a rust brush. now is this legal to use? yes it is a brush, but it is from a texture I shot myself.
I'm not trying to push any rule here just looking for an anwser.

You should probably ask that question to Site Council via the help button rather than asking the general community. I personally am not sure, but I think that brush would NOT be allowed in Advanced, but would be allowed in Expert. Again, I'm not positive so a message to SC would be your best bet.

Agreed.
Until then I'll say that I'm pretty sure what you are asking for is allowed in 'Expert' as long as it is applied as 'traditional' texturing but not 'Advanced' where it says, "You may... apply filters, effects, dodge & burn, and other tools to all or part of your entry, but NO new shapes or features may be created in the process." (emphasis added)

Steve is right, it is not legal in the "Advanced" editing ruleset. However, it is legal in the "Expert" editing ruleset. The current open challenges (Landscapes and Hair) and the Free Study for April are running under "Expert" editing, and it would be legal for those three challenges.

What???? Steve is RIGHT? Mark that on your calendars, folks! In some countries and cultures Steve being correct might be considered heresy or treason.

Hmmmm.. hearsay sounds pretty good to. Everybody believes it but, at least in the USA, it can't be accepted as valid in a court of law. LOL!!

I have a question about brushes in expert editing, if I didn't make them myself are they allowed and are they considered graphics? Also are PS actions allowed?
Edit to say I've contacted SC to ask.

Did you get an answer regarding the use of third party brushes? I want to use some brushes in my entry, I am using them to degrade an image somewhat (add weathering etc) so would be interested on the opinion of the SC.. anyone from SC reading this care to comment? |

the consensus, so far, is that the PS brushes are considered to be clip art so they would not be legal even in the expert editing challenges. |

But surely that all depends on how they are used. Thats a really sucky rule if thats the case and completely rules out my entry for the freestudy..
bummer. 10 hours+ work down the pan. :-( |

Looks like you'll have a great outtake? That is a bummer (spending 10 hours +), hopefully you can profit from your effort in some other way (print sales, stock, etc...).
I guess it helps to get answers to these kind of questions BEFORE making investment in editing time? |

I would hope that usage would be considered. That's far too much of a blanket statement. Honestly, brushes are just shortcuts for things that you can do without brushes. (It just takes more time to draw a leaf-shaped shadow than to use a brush to do it.)
Yeah... even though I never use shaped brushes, that seems like a bad ruling to me. |

I may contact SC to determine whether its legal or not. I really think the image is within the scope of the expert editing rules, the brush isnt there to add a butterfly or leaf or something like that, it doesn't even look like brushwork/clipart. It certainly wouldnt be classed as clipart by any stretch of the imagination.
