I am researching before purchasing a softbox. I have two umbrellas already. I like how softboxes have more control over light. Alienbees just came out with the foldable ones that are easy to setup. Any suggestions before purchasing??? |

I just got the 35" foldable octabox in this past week. it is great! easy to set up...just set on the floor and push down! it is a little springy on the way back up, but if you keep a hand on it, it won't get away from you. very compact. maybe the diameter of a dinner plate (Edit) my hand, fingers extended at the base when folded. inner baffle uses snaps, outer cover uses velcro. it is the first softbox i have used and it is really easy. i'm glad i upgraded before ordering a regular one.

I love umbrellas for the portableness (that's what I use outside of studio) and hate softboxes for their unruliness (difficulty in putting them together, or size if leaving them already put together). I don't know anything about the "foldable" softboxes you speak of, but it sounds like it might eliminate my major complaint. I'd certainly be willing to try it if I were using AB's.

| I am thinking about getting the octabox rather than the softbox for the unique round catchlights?? Octabox tend to cost more though? |

Here is an example I just shot with my foldable octabox and and umbrella. The octabox was on my right (showcased in the dog's left eye...right side of your screen), umbrella to my left. You can see both the octabox and the umbrella in the dog's right eye. The umbrella is smaller and you can see the shadow of the strobe towards the center.
