Well im still considering the Tamrom 28-75mm/2.8, but i want more options incase i cant find that one. My budget is roughly $500 CAD, ill go up to around $550 with tax. Opinions on the Sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6, though its not as fast, im wondering how yall like it. Is it sharp etc...

I had a sigma 18-125mm. It was quite sharp but the focusing was very hit and miss and slow. It finally broke and the aperture stuck on f8.

I suggest the sigma 18-70mm which is very sharp or the sigma 18-50mm EX which is faster.
The tamron is excellent but not wide enough for me.

Do you want a replacement for your 18-55 or an addition? What do you usually shoot? And what focal length(s) do you use mostly?

I got mine at Buydig.com in January and that was the best price avail at the time.

I was also considering the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR, Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX. I kind of wish I would have gone with one of these sometimes because the extra wide angle would be really nice. Actually knowing what I know now, I might have just kept my kit lens and gone for a Sigma 10-20mm or Tokina 12-14mm, and put off the 28-75mm. The other lens I might think about is the Tamron 18-200mm XR. It is a little more money but it would be a great walk around lens.

Completely different lenses with different intended uses.

Do you need fast, constant aperture lens? for low light, shallow DOF, etc? The 28-75 is a nice lens ( got mine used for $380 US if I recall correctly)
The 18-125 has more range but is not that good a lens in the big picture. The tamron 24-135 3.5-5.6 for $400 US is a way better lens.

Tamron has a new 18-250 lens out that is reviewed in the latest pop photo magazine and it's better than the 18-200 version. Probably a bit over your budget, but if you want a one lens solution you may want to take a look at this one.

well im mostly looking for a good walk around lens for when i go to california. In a previous thread someone suggested the 28-75mm, but i still wanna weigh some options. I wanted something with fair range cuz im going to be shooting some scenery, both close up and a bit further away.

Hmm, thats another real possibilty! Nice range, and its around the same price as the 28-75.

Interesting...my 18-125 also is "stuck", but it's the zoom that stuck. Too bad, I really liked that lens.

I still think I'd recommend it--it lasted more than three years and was the lens I used most heavily. And it wasn't expensive.

Though, if I stayed with Canon, I would get the 18-200 OS (stabilized version). But I may go Nikon and get the Nikon 18-200 VR. (If I went with the Pentax K10D, I would still buy the 18-200 non-stabilized version in a heartbeat.
