This is probably a semi-stupid question...but I'm curious whether an ocean/wave picture can be considered part of a "landscape" shot. Needless to say, I'm asking this question because I don't want points deducted by people saying, "That's the ocean stupid! This is a LANDSCAPE challenge...not a SEASCAPE challenge!" I know that sounds extreme but there are quite a few people that are part of DP that would say something like that. In my humble opinion, ANYTHING in the natural world (mountains, sand, ocean, water, lakes, etc.) can be considered part of a specific landscape. I'm just curious what the community thinks. Thanks a lot.

Yes, I am wondering the same thing. I actually entered one and then removed it as I thought maybe you can't have seascapes. Clarification on this point would be great. |

Seascapes have won before. |

Previous discussion here
Don't expect a definitive answer here -- it is strictly a matter of opinion, and very few are represented here. |

Personally, I think any "earth" formation is technically part of a landscape...so I'm not too worried about it. I'm just curious what the average DP member thinks.

IMO, "landscape" is like a general category; "seascape", "mountainscape", "skyscape" are more like subdivisions of landscape. Again IMO, just because it says "land," doesn't mean it excludes scenery other than land. The definition I use for "landscape" is, "The branch of art dealing with the representation of natural scenery." Natural scenery includes the ocean and ocean waves. |

Ok. Those answers are good enough for me. Thanks for the dictionary clarification ;-)

I like what Ursula said. It's like squares and rectangles. All seascapes are landscapes, but not all landscapes are seascapes. |
