I'm new to lighting with anything other than available light. It seems like alien bees are a pretty popular option. I'm looking for something to be mainly used on location, as I don't really have a place I can set up a studio just yet. So portable power is a necessity. Is there a standard that everyone here uses? Like X brand generator and X brand lights are the "Kleenex" of lighting setups for location.. Maybe the best thing I could use would be for someone to point me to some resources where I can learn about this type of lighting and what equipment options are out there.

If you're new to lighting, and looking for lighting on location, you might look at the Lighting 101 section of the excellent strobist blog. David makes those portable strobes sing.
