| Well, I've been on terminal leave for about 40 days now after retiring from the Air Force, and the wife has gotten tired of me being home all the time. (Imagine that) Her worries are over..I got a job as a Network Analyst in the local hospital today. Yippee!! Not a photography subject but I have a few friends here and thought I would share. |

40 days?? Man, I took four months off after my ten years in. And it woulda been longer if my unemployment benefits didn't run out.
Congrats, James. You will do very well, I am sure.
and congrats to your wife, too. :) |

Good for you! The time off can be very nice, but it can get stressful knowing that you should do something and aren't. I stayed out when I was laid off last summer for as long as my unemployment held out. Just for the record, I've put my two weeks in at my retail sales job and will be hunting again!!! :P
Congrats to you! You'll do well. |

Like I tell my kids - you're supposed to hunt for the new job BEFORE you quit your current one! And besides, who wouldn't want to stay in retail sales?? ;-) Good luck to you, Kat! :) |

Reasons NOT to be in retail sales:
1. Hubby doesn't care that I'm quitting (the drama is VERY stressful)
2. Late nights and everyday of every weekend.
3. Have two days a month to spend w/hubby.
4. Need to get another 9-5 w/good benefits.
5. MORE MONEY, MORE MONEY, MORE MONEY....Muaahahahaha!

Congrats... I'm on the other end, looking to retire, but not for 10 years. Even so the countdown is on!

Congratulations on the new job...and a little late on the retirement. I have almost exactly 25 months left before my retirement from the Navy. There have been a few times where I almost walked away but I'm very glad I stuck it out and will be getting that paycheck (as small as it is) every month. I'm not gonna be able to pull off that much terminal leave (unless someone makes a mistake in my leave balance lol), but a good month should be enough. The family isn't used to having me around so that may be all they can handle lol.
As for a job...Oh man have I ever got to get that worked out...I'm actually a bit worried about that. There are a lot of people back home that say they can help out but who knows.
edit to add image for ya, just took it friday

Yay! Good for you! I'll be in the same boat in about three years if the Navy will let me retire at 20. :)
Should I start thinking about what I want to do when I grow up now, or in three years? |

That depends on what you do for the Navy. The job market can be a real pain in the ass if you are not preparewd. I have been building my resume for the last year and researching the local area for jobs. I was a network engineer for the AF so I had a pretty good market to play with. People do like to hire retired military especially senior enlisted, because of the leadership background. Good luck to you.
I was scared to death for a while because this is all I have ever done, really. My wife and I both were concerned that my strict attitude and work ethic would be a challenge to get over. But, I decided to just be myself at interviews and keep my integrity and disciplne intact. I (tooting my own horn) did an outstanding job in the Air Force and will continue to work the same way. I just have to remember that I can't throw chairs and keep anyone after work to pick grass out of the concrete when they piss me off. Oh well.
Thanks everyone here for the kind words of encouragement. You are a great bunch of people. |

Don't you just hate that? And you gotta figure it might actually do some good... but like you said, oh well.
And I have absolutely no idea what I want to be when I grow up, but I keep puttin' off that retirement thing, so I've got a few more years to think about it. Again. :-) (Though they really aren't gonna tolerate me a whole lot longer - this will have to be the last tour....) |

Sure ya can. Try not to hit anyone and you'd be surprised by the number of people who get motivated by active supervision! Some of us will just look at you funny and say "Yes Sir" and keep on doing our job. I like ex-mil for superiors. At least they know how to give orders! They're generally not timid. Have fun with your new career!

[thread hijack...of sorts]
Hey EB...since you are in Charleston and most of that base is closed (help close it myself...miss that base and area) There are just a few NEC's I can guess you are in and all of them makes me think you will have great job opportunities when you get out.
As far as when you should work on your plan for getting out...DO IT ASAP! <--speaking from personal experience here. I wish I had had more drive and mentoring long ago. I though my career was going fine, just going day to day to day...then WHAM'O! I'm almost out and I only have a Associate Degree in general studies.
I started in the Navy as a dental tech, you have to have a speciality really to be a male dental assistant on the outside. And as you probably know, got converted to a corpsman (I call it the hostil take-over but not all agree). Had this happened earlier in my career I might have found it useful but now I almost feel it has hurt me. Even as a dental tech I spent my entire career in admin...never had the NEC just the skills and history. That too has hurt me because when I got stationed here I had no clue of how to do anything and I was supposed to be in charge of people (they know tons more than I can even pretend to know).
I know I probably sound like a poster at the education center but believe me when I tell you, find what you think you want to do and work towards it now. Don't let those next 3 years sneek up on you.

I am 37 years old and still don't know what I'm going to be when I grow up. I've tried every single job I ever wanted to as a kid, and adult.
These are all the jobs I've worked:
McDonald's--Maintenance
McDonald's--Management
Video store--Management
Jack-in-the-Box--Management
Grocery store--Bagger
6th Grade Outdoor Education Camp/Summer Camp--Trainer, Cabin leader, Archery instructor
USAF--Fire Fighter/911 operator
One Hour Photo place--Manager
Library--Night Supervisor
Alaskan Fish Cannery--Variety of jobs
Grocery Store--Front End Manager
Circus--Security
Pizza Hut--Management
Factory--Production/Manager Trainee
Newspaper--Printing room
School Bus Driver*
Firefighter/EMT-B*
Commuter Bus Driver*
* = I'm currently employed at these jobs.
I think we all need to try the jobs we wanted as kids. Now, I just have to finally get around to picking ONE job to have as a career. *sigh*
Back on topic: Good luck. |
