"The Wedge" in Newport Beach, California is an awesome body surfing / boogie boarding spot (it's usually too dangerous for surfers). Every couple years, the waves get huge. Yesterday was one of those days. Two people actually died here the day before I took the pictures. You've got to be semi-crazy to get in the water when the waves are like this. I took a bunch of pictures and put this photo gallery together. It's worth checking out: //test2.fairmontschools.com/wedge/index.html (the pictures get better as you go through the gallery).

| Damn that's some crazy stuff. Great capture of the guy flipping off the crest and doing a horizontal roll through the air. That wave had to pummel him after he landed, though. |

Yeah, it was crazy. I'd never go out there in conditions like that. It makes for a great picture though!

Drools at the photo op here.
There is something about the mindset of a surfer that defies all common sense sometimes.
Great set of shots there!

Great shots! Last few times I was there, the surf was flat. I really need to get out there on the big surf days.

| Thanks for posting, very nice photos. I have to check the surf report more often and head down when it's like this. I'll be sure to show my Dad to relive some old memories. He used to be a lifeguard there in the early 60's and used to body surf this stuff at red flag. |

| Really cool ... I lived in Redondo Beach for 7 years and remember when the waves got huge ... it was always worth a trip down to check them out ... thanks for sharing! |

| awesome pics! #12, 27, and 39 are my favorites -- very dramatic waves and the feeling of peril for the boogie boarder. |
