I shot some pics today in RAW/Jpeg basic and I can't open the RAW files.
When I view the thumbnails in the My Pictures folder in Windows I can see the NEF icons that correctly correspond to the Jpeg thumbnail beside it.
However, when I try to open that NEF icon Adobe Photoshop CS says "Could not complete your request because of a disk error."
and Raw Shooters Essentials says "No RAW files found. This folder does not contain any supported RAW files."
Has anybody heard of this problem and know how to resolve it?
Thanks |

CS is uses Adobe Camera Raw 2.4. The latest version which would be required to open the file atleast for photoshop is ACR 3.6/3.7 which requires CS2 or CS3.
Not sure about RSE.
EDIT - Just rethought about it though. Are you normally able to open D80 raws in CS? It still maybe a problem that was addressed in a later version of ACR. But im not sure in that mode the thumbnails are embedded into the actual file which if ACR doesnt understand how to handle it would cause an error.

| I've never been able to open a Raw file with CS or RSE that was shot by my D80. Shots with the D70, no problem. |

Nikon encrypts their raw files which are proprietary anyways. Adobe has to reverse engineer each version of the format.
The latest version of ACR will solve the issue but i believe 2.4 was the latest for CS, CS2 supporting the newer version with 3.6/3.7 being current. Adobes page will tell u which version support which files.

| Just to clarify, are you saying that in no way will Adobe Photoshop CS open a RAW file produced by the D80? |

Its Camera Raw Plugin is incapable and CS will not run the later versions of the plugin. You could if its desperate enough download the 30 day trial of CS2 or whatever convert them to tif's.
I wish you could use the DNG converter. Adobes DNG converter would convert the NEF's to DNG's which can then be opened by photoshop but i do believe CS cant open DNG's either.
The best thing right now is the Nikon software. Which believe it or not sometimes does a better job, camera model depending.
Im going to bed but hopefully someone else can comment on this im suprised no one else has. But yeah as far as i know CS is just way old. Its very capable but its not supported anymore.

Robert you can use Nikon View it's free and should have come with your D80. But you should think about investing in Capture NX it is an awesome piece of software for the money.

I think that I'll take a look at Capture NX as you suggested. I don't know how it compares to RAW Shooters. I really liked using RSE sometimes, I hope that Capture NX has as many features.
Thanks Waz. |

Change that to Picture Project that should work and came with your D80.
I guess it is Nikon View Pro that will open the D80 NEF's.

Done already. I've seen this before and it was something that I really wanted to get...and then forgot about.
I'll be off to my local camera shop tomorrow to get this program. It looks awesome! |

I didn't know that was a possibility. I looked at the Nikon website and after not finding the option to buy it there the best it offered me was to enter my zip code for a local vendor. I'll check out that site tomorrow after I get some sleep.
You learn something new every day, ugh, I mean hour on DPC. Thanks again. |

| Another solution is to use PS Elements 5.0, if you are spending money and want a newer Abobe product without buying CS2. It comes with their raw converter that opens my CR2 files and should open the newer NEF files. |
