I need to DOUBLE outline some text - blue as the main body, then orange around that, then black around that.
I can get as far as the orange (via text layer, blending options, stroke), but then I can not figure out how to do the second outline.
The "Effects-Stroke" is sitting there tucked in/under the text layer, and I can't figure out how to apply/merge just those, without merging it all.
Can somebody please help? |

Or, ctrl+click the layer in the layers panel to select the text. Then on a new layer go edit>stroke. It won't edit when you change the text though :( Glow could work depending on the settings :)

As usual, a thousand ways to get there..... but I would:
Select the text, Edit / Stroke, 5 pixels one color; then Edit / Stroke, 3 pixels. (Use pixel sizes that work best for your text).

The technique I use is:
First apply your orange stroke.
Then go back to you Layer Styles dialog and open up the Drop Shadow. Set your Opacity to 100%, your distance to 0 Pixels and your spread to 100%. Then simply set the color to black and play with the Size slider to get the desired effect.

ok
first write out the txt...
then take the magic want tool and while holding alt or ctrl (havnt done it in a while) and move the cursor over the text layer... a hand icon with a square marquee symbol will replace the mouse...click...and your text will be outlined in marquee...then go EDIT>STROKE>select the size you want the inner stroke to be and select INSIDE stroke option....now do the same steps but thistime select OUTSIDE stroke option...and BOOM! IM me if you have any issues JIBADACTYL < AIM SCREEN NAME |

David and Lee:
Tried that, but both ways end up putting the black around the outline of the textblock, rather than each individual letter.
Cindi:
What you typed is exactly what I had hoped to do, but I won't let me GET past the first one, it only lets me change it, not add a second one.
Ben:
I haven't quite managed to follow you yet..... still trying, though. |

It does let you, remember you must do the outside outline first, then the inside one, so outside pixel number should be much larger than inside pixel number. What text are you trying to do, I'll try it for you...

Cindi, thanks for the offer, but it would take too long to explain, and I'd rather somehow learn to do it myself, anyway.
However, I might give up on PS soon and try another program *sigh*
I can't get this to work via any of you wonderful people's suggestions :-( |

Thanks for your help, everybody.
I couldn't get it to work in PS, so I ended up using my Lumapix Fotofusion, instead. It still isn't exactly what I wanted, but I decided it is good enough.
Nothing special anyway, it's just a name tag for work, after all :-)

Based on what you described, this is what I thought you were going for:
I dropped the words "Outer Glow" and ran because I had to leave for a bit. Anyway, the way I did this in PS was:
1) Type the words and set the color of the font.
2) Using the Layer Effects, stroke the letters
3) Also using the Layer Effects, add a black Outer Glow by setting Blend Mode to normal, Opacity to 100%, then adjusted Size and Spread to get the thickness of the outline that I wanted.
It looks like you added a drop shadow using Fotofusion... that could have been done in PS as well. But you won't find me knocking Fotofusion! I find that just about anything I want to do in PS, I can do about 10 times faster in Fotofusion! :-)
