When I work on someone else's computer other than my own and I am typing a long PM to another DPCer, I will be logged off from that computer if I take to long to type my message. That happens a lot.

Under normal circumstances I don't have a problem with being logged off whether it be for security and/or resource efficiency purposes. That makes perfectly good sense to me. I would do the same because MOST of the time that is the logical course of action under other conditions. It is NOT the logical course of action if someone is typing a PM which can take a lot of time.

What I don't like is losing my message. That is inexcusable.

My suggestion is that if a PM is being typed AND if the DPC user is logged off that information be retained AND if the user immediately logs back on they are put back into a PM session with all the information they had typed retained and redisplayed.

Easy fix is to save login/password. When you hit log out this information is erased.

Some people are paranid but i stay logged into here on more then 10 PC's 6 of them accesible by other people and have yet to have a problem. Simply because no one here is busy sifting through the history and checking each site.

If your on your home computer you should feel plenty safe. The only people that will be a danger are the people in yor home.

But if you save it then hit log out your logged out its no longer saved. And your logged in till you hit log out.

No wonder I didn't get that long message from you...hehehe!

I have the same timeout problem usually when checking the scores. Realistically speaking for loss prevention purposes, you are probably better off typing long messages in a word processor (even notepad or wordpad) and saving the text and then cutting and pasting into the PM screen when finished composing.

Where you writing to me how to photograph architecture? (HINT HINT!!)

DAMN! Now, I've missed all of your secrets!

Again, as I said, being logged off for security purposes makes good sense. I further understand that one user can be logged into more than one computer.

What does NOT makes good sense is to lose a long PM message if that was the LAST thing you were working on before logging back in. I want to avoid information loss if that is at all possible.

I further understand that if a person has NOT hit the 'ENTER' key during the session that it is impossible to save and store the typed information since the last 'ENTER'.

But if there is information that could be retained since the last 'ENTER' then it should be captured and it should further be assumed that a PM was in progress since the last 'ENTER' by that user. Under those conditions the PM screen should be redisplayed and any captured data redisplayed.

I know it is not a great fix but, maybe try typing your pm in word or notepad and then copy/paste the pm. It adds an extra step or two to the pm process but much less fear of losing any information.

Frustrating to lose a long thought out message because your session has reset.

eta: oops didn't mean to parrot hihosilver, slow morning for me...

Timing out a meaningless session, like checking scores, is one thing... you can always check scores again... but timing out a PM is another because typed information becomes lost forever. That is what should be avoided if at all possible.

I agree that periodically copying and pasting typed information into Wordpad could help avoid this problem and I actually do this, but I don't always remember to do so and should NEVER have to.

Well, I can see your panties are in a bunch this AM...over this one.

Look at it this way...if you compose a second time around, your PM will be even better because your thoughts will be clarified by the second writing.

Now, where's my PM on all of your architecture photography secrets?!!!

It's not just in PMs when logins time out, it si also in forum posts and comments. And the information is lost if there is some form of error during the post. I would be nice if it was stored somewhere.

It is now "stored" in the OS clipboard ... if the PM or post times-out, you can use Edit > Paste to restore the text.

This has been my workaround for this problem for years ... whenever I remember to use it. I've also started trying to write shorte....

I do -- but those are the key words, aren't they; "whenever I remember to use it". :D
