Ive been thinking of possible options for when i go to california to store photo's while im on the go, and though this option isn't possible for the time being i thought it'd be cool. I can get an 80gig ipod for $250, im wondering if is possible to get a back to back female USB connector and a CF card reader and have it set up like this [IPOD]---[USB}---[CARD READER] (the --- is the cables going from each device) Is there any way i can make the Ipod automaticly upload all the pictures off the CF card this way? I thought with the 80gigs it would make a good storage device for not too much $$, and i can still use it for music. I doubt that it can display Raw files though but it would still be a good mass storage device imo. Thoughts?

Was just talking about that yesterday. Its a great alternative to carrying a laptop around. :)

I highly doubt this is possible. You should look into those Epson Multimedia/Photo Storage Devices.

iPod camera connector

perhaps you haven't seen this. you can connect your camera or a card reader with it.

Wow! And it is inexpensive too!

Slow and the battery dies fast.

I agree with this option. I actually have a similar product from Kanguru.com (now obsolute) that doesn't have a display but was great. It stopped copying from the card recently but still works great as a external hard drive when hooked to the computer. The battery could have been better but I could still copy a few cards before I had to charge again. They even have some that will burn right to a CD from the card but I don't think those have taken off like they hoped. I would love another like the epson ones.

I guess you havent seen where they wired a IDE controller to a 4 GB nano and strapped a 250GB HDD to it... off charger barrery lasts about 10 minutes lol.

Well that doesn't sound very practical.

Would that work good? Looks cheap enough i think. I figure, bring a 80gig ipod, that connector, and a car charger and your set :D

My mate tried this at a Gran Prix and drained the battery within an hour. He was there for 3 days.

I use the iPod/CF reader setup, and it really is painfully slow, and hard on the battery.... I usually use it when I'm traveling, and I can download at night, and then charge the iPod while I sleep...

The IPOD as a storage device works (I did it in Hawaii last summer) but as others stated it is really slow! I got the photo adapter for my IPOD so that I could hook my USB port from the camera to the IPOD. I could download about 100 images before the battery would die!

Yes it is possible, but not really practical...

I went on a medical mission trip to northern Pakistan after the October 8, 2005 earthquake. I took tons of pictures each day to document the process, and every evening backed up the images to my ipod using a USB reader plugged into the camera connector. While it was not as fast as using a laptop, and it did drain the batteries, it is an inexpensive fairly easy way to backup your data, even in remote locations. I would make sure you pack a charger, and ideally have the ipod fully charged before starting a large download, but otherwise it's a great option. It will allow you to preview any .jpg image (if you shoot raw it won't show you the image, but if you do raw+jpg you'll be fine). If you need to do lots of uploads in the field all day, one of those dedicated thingies may be helpful, but for most uses the ipod will work great.

I bought a 40GB Photobank, it was realy slow at reading a 15 GB CF card directly. I think it seemed like an hour or more. I can upload them to a Laptop or desktop PC in about 8 minutes for the same size CF card.

It does have an A/C adapter and I even had it uploading in my cargo pants pocket. It worked standing and walking, but I almost bent a CF card when sitting and moving in a vehicle seat.

I have an 80 GB iPod, but I heard it is slow, so I haven't got an adapter. It only works on the rechargeable D/C batteries.

What size CF card did you use Asimchoudri, and how long to load it to the iPod?
