ok, lets see if you guys are really as smart as you think you are ;)

1. a person snaps his fingers. One minute later he snaps them again. He then waits 2 minutes before the next snap, and 4 minutes for the following snap. The he waits 8 minutes. He continues in this manner, each time doubling the time internal between snaps. How much will elapse by the 100th snap?

2. a goat is tied at a corner of a 20m x 40m barn with a 50m rope. If it can graze at any spot outside of the barn to which its rope can reach, what is the size of its grazing area?

I'm gonna keep adding more questions as i get to them...so dont be afraid to re-visit the thread every couple fo minutes.

studying binary?

and I believe the answer would be 2 to the 100th so...
1.2676506 × 10 to the 30th

or
1267650600000000000000000000000 minutes

or

What do I win.

Wouldn't it actually be the SUM of the geometric progession 2 to the 100th plus 1?, or actually a geometric series?? and for the life of me I don't remember how to solve a series or progression anymore so I guess I'll just shut up now, LOL.

That would be the total time spent waiting between all snaps

Should be 2^99.

Edit....hmm - unless the very first snap is counted. Then it is 2^98.

first snap
second snap - 2^0
third - 2^1
fourth - 2^2

I got 63,382,530,011,411,470,748,351,602,688 Minutes

How wrong is that?? LOL

ETA: I graphed it

::::Jojo stares in wonder::::

So, when do we get the answer??
04/09/2007 09:11:48 PM · #19
Step 1
A = 3.14 x (50m · 50m)
A = 3.14 x (2500m)
A = 7850
Step 2
Since the barn is a rectangle it is tied to a 90 deg angle so the area must by be reduced because a 1/4 of the area is inside the barn.

A= 7850m x 3/4
A= 5887.5m

yeah, but happens when the rope goes around the corner, i solved it where it was 3/4 the 50 radius circle and 1/4 each of a 10 radius and 30 radiud circle for the two corners it bent around

But the barn is 20m x 40m...so that means the critter can go 10meters past the 40m length and 30meters past the 20m width...that will have to be added to the final tally (but only a 1/4 of the area of the circle)...so...you will have to add 19.635 sm's to that as well as 176.715 sm's for a grand total of...6830.85. I think, lol.
