OK, dug out my old 300D today, slapped on the 18-55 kit lens, put it in fully auto mode (YIKES!!!, dropped it into JPG mode and went out shooting, I even went as far as removing the add-on battery grip.

What an amazingly liberating experience! although the temptation to switch it into Manual or even Av mode at times was almost overwhelming, I perservered and to be honest I have had heaps of fun looking at the shots. I will defintely try to use this setup for the insect challenge. Once you take away all the technical aspects and just shoot for the moment you can pull off some quite unique shots. I didnt find myself thinking, "if this was RAW I could adjust the white balance here", or "maybe a wider aperature to blur the background slightly", or even the old "I can crop that up in photoshop".. granted a lot of shots were `snapshots`, but sometimes its nice to go back to basics.

Recommended!

Oh, and pressing the shutter button and barely hearing the shutter was a joy! I forgot how quite the 300D was.. I did miss the full-frame viewfinder of my 5D though.

AS long as you didnt remove your clothes and run down the street while doing this then your okay. That would be overly liberating!

Nah, I am not allowed to do that since the court-case.

I'de love to try it but don't have a 300D anywhere..

Might try it with the D100. I can remember when my D200 was being fixed and I never had anything else to play with I was screwing around with the old FujiFilm s602, that was fun.

putting everything on manual as well is good. manual focus, shutter, aperture.

Ah man, the Fuji S602 was a killer camera, my first `prosumer` camera and I loved it to bits. My personal best image was taken with the Fuji S602.

I'm starting to realize more and more I don't take enough snapshots any more! I'm always too busy trying to get a good photograph, even on outings with friends.

The only thing I miss about my old camera (Panasonic point and shoot!) was how easy it was to carry around. I gave it to my boyfriends mom last summer and just last month it got burned up in a truck fire!! I was a little sad to see that thing go, esp because she had come to love it so much.

Yep. I don't even have an SLR and I suffer that illness. I need to remember that sometimes keeping memories of good times is more important than creating a piece of art.
