So this is the first image i have tackled since watching joey's DvD and was wondering what anyone thought of the post processing.

I like the processing in the edited one, but think it might be a little too dark. Now perhaps that is only the case due to my monitor calibration and settings, but that is what I think. Other than that, good job! :-)

I like the processing but the image is too dark. The histogram is blocking on the left.

I think you could still get the same look with a brighter image. Making the red pop more I think would be an improvement.

It may just need a contrast adjustment, especially in the red. There's a lot of detail in the sweater that could be brought out.

thanks for the ideas guys. I think I tend towards darker pictures as it seems to be what I like. Had a very quick shot at doing what you guys have sugessted so here is a lighter version with a more vivid red.

I like the latest version better. However, the red may be a touch over saturated now. I think it's all about balance between the dark background and your subject.

The red seems a bit too 'strawberry' to me.

Do you mind if I post my attempt?

Go ahead, I'd like to see someone else's approach to it.

To me your original edit blocked up too much on the left so I came up with this:

When you indicated that the dark look was what you were going for and you showed your new edit with the saturated red, the red in my original edit looked too washed out. Here's the second attempt, slightly darker than the first and more saturated red.

Both attempts were adjusted in Adobe Lightroom.

thanks cpanaioti, I think part of the darkness was used to cover up the mark on the right of the picture, looks like a smudge or smear, so burned that and lightened again. with the red not quite so RED.

Much better (IMO anyway). Getting the vibrancy in the red to match that of the rest of the image is key. Brightening the red up too much makes it look out of place.

edit: Now, info on how you got from the original to the current state would be appreciated. ;o)

started with the original image, duplicated it as a layer twice, masked out the background and then masked out the woman on the separate layers. levels and curves to each layer. flatten image. duplicate the background layer and dodged the woman and burned the background around the edges. That was pretty much it don't want to give too much away as I don't want to give away what is essentially Joey's DVD, which I would HIGHLY recommend.
