I can't believe the low scores for these shots. I think this has been one of the best all around Free Studies for quite some time, YET it has photos that did not score as well as I would have expected. I saw a multitude of shots just in the top 20 that EASILY could have been seen on the front page. Many of these are some of my favorite shots on dpchallenge. Anybody have any ideas why such high quality photos were recieving what I consider sub par scores per the quality of the images??

Some of my thoughts

1. The April fools joke started a sting of low scores proving the point that people will vote in relation to what they receive. Even after the "Joke Votes" were removed the scores still did not go up much.

2. 560 entries, a lot and most people on received about 150 votes. Thats only in the 25% voting range.

3. A lot of duplicate entries (bird, animals, etc.). And for some reason after seeing so many images of the same thing some voters get a sour taste about that subject.

There are a multitude of images in the top 400 that could easily have been on the front page.

Such is the nature of Free Studies.

Maybe its getting to the point of oversaturated, far too many challenges to vote on, so people tend to shy away from the challenges with lots of images and concentrate on the smaller challenges?

'tis one of the reasons we have so many challenges now. The original idea was to divide the huge number of entries in the open challenge into two challenges, only one of which you could enter. It helped.

I think, what might be needed now is a similar aspect to the Free Studies. Perhaps 4 different Free Studies a month. One for each editing rule-set. You can only enter one of them.

Conversely, we could have the Free Studies separated into basic "themes".. but that could get very unwieldy.

I think the Editing Ruleset separation, however, would be a fine idea.

For the last two years I don't understand what scores what and why anymore. It's not just this challenge, but the level of actual photography is pretty low (regardless of the postprocessing).
