on my sony cybershot DSC-P31 when you use the flash it flashes like 4 times then flashes and takes the picture....whats with all the flashing before the image is even taken? the flash goes like this *press the button* *beep* *focus* *press all the way* *flash-flash-flah-flash* quick pause *Flash and picture taken*

Its a pre flash to help prevent red eye.

that is a little orange light that goes on even before the flash...im pretty sure

What it does is dialate the eyes iris so the flash doesn't reflect off the back of your eye. This is very common on P&S cameras as they usually don't have a hot shoe flash. Notice I said most. I also find it to be a pain, but I don't have a P&S so I don't run into the problem. However, some DSLR's have this feature as well.

i see.... well this P&S is soon to be replaced but im still unsure of which camera

It's also possible to turn it off on most cameras. You just have to make sure the flash mode is something other than the 'eye' mode.
