I did a dumb dumb thing!
I burned all of Jan photos to disks and deleted the files from my hd.
I usually visually verify that the images on the disk were precisely the images I am about to delete.
Because I was so full I couldn't even open a program, I decided to just verify that the disks had images on them and dumped the folders anyway. to give me room to work. DUM DUM!
Turns out disk 5 and 6 were duplicates of D3...how this happened I'm at a total loss. The files were deleted last week and have since been rewritten. so no retrieval is possible.
Images that are on DPC that are gone forever are.
I am really REALLY upset on their loss. I am greatful it was only half of a month and not more. Harsh lesson learned.
Can't be to careful when you delete shit!

I'm really sorry to hear that.. I just bought a DVD writer and burned everything I have onto DVDs. If you're that low on disk space you should consider an external HDD for storage.. |

I just filled up my Hard drive too. I've been in the process of putting all my images on DVD's now too. My concern now is preserving the DVD's so that they don't get scratched. I've decided to save the edited files, the unedited TIFF's, and the RAW images just in case somethin happens. |

I make 2 copies. one goes to a saftey deposit box in case of housefire.
so I have 6 copies of D3.

Yeah i back up to alot of optical media and one day thought, well this does me no good if the house burns down.
95% of all firesafes are not rated for plastic media. The only firesafes that can protect CD's DVD's and Flash cards have to keep the internal temperature under 125 degree's and are usally bigger and more expensive then others. I havent found one that will do it more then 30 minutes.
Every other firesafe will not protect them at all. In fact its amazing anyone thinks that a 300 degree 30 minute safe does too much good, better then open flame but 300 degrees for 30 minuts is enough to cook a pizza. 350 degrees and the papers finished. |

I really wondered about those firesafes. I decided offsite would be a better solution.

I used to keep my backup discs in my firesafe, but realized the same thing and now I send a copy down to my dad to keep there (don't have a safe deposit box). |

I am hanging out for the next gen DVD (HD or BR) cause it's crazy to backup to DVD even :-o) I have a NAS box that has 900Gb or usable space after the RAID5 costs (meaning I should be able to lose 1 of the 4 drives without data loss). I image my main computers drive there also, so I should be able to recover from a failed C: on my machine.
Right now, I burn DVD's and stash them at work but it's not like that covers most of the stuff on the drives (I cannot backup my music files cause I am not patient enough to insert the 40 DVD it would take ).

TlemetryI had the same thing happen about six months ago. I had around 25 CD-roms of pictures and was wanted to go through them and do some re-editing. To my surprise some images worked and some didn't. I could never find out what happened.
I purchased an usb external hard drive (180 gb) for $69 and now that's where I back-up my pictures. IMO its safer and a lot quicker to retrieve files when I want them.

Paper does not ignite until 451°F, regardless of how long the heat is applied. It will dry out and probably degrade otherwise, but it shouldn't burn. |

In school they said 300 degree's but i found later a source that says it only degreades at 300. According to the Firesafe companies it will become unusable at 350 degrees (basicly start turning black). Trying to find a new source wikipedia doesnt have anything.
But a 1 Hour fire should be enought to get the 30 minute case destroyed anyways.
EDIT - Found a source that says 451 now, but some variances in the testing methods.
The lack of oxygen would also cause problems in igniting but could cause it to smolder of course.

and to think you wouldn't have lost the images if you hadn't tried to back them up... what a bummer.

Heh had that happen. Hard drive controller on my WD250C went up during a backup. Because of the backup rigging lol. |

Had the same thing happen last year, had to reload PowerDvd onto my PC. All my photos disppeared, never to be seen again. Something on Powerdvd had wiped my drive of all images. Tried recovery progs, but only got a few back.
Now I copy straight to second hard drive and external h/d before shifting photos from the card to my main drive. |

i went to costa rica for 9 days and lost my camera bag on the flight home.... can you say 900 photos on 3 memory cards?
and that was after my previous camera was stolen on a cruise to belize, cayman islands, cozumel, and costa maya on the 4th day.
i feel your pain.
