Years ago when I built my system it had a CD reader. THen i upgraded to a burner and then about 18 months ago to a Sony DVD burner. Right before christmas (and after the warranty expired of course) it died. Nothing made it work again.
So for a while I tossed my CDRW back in - did nothing, and it read fine. I don't recall burning anything.
A friend then gave me a DVD burner that he had lying about - not sure the brand. I stuck it in and things seemed fine.
About 2 weeks ago I wanted to burn a data CD (for mp3 use in my car) and after 5 tries with every piece of software I had I got nothing..Nero said it only works with the Sony drive, Windows built in burning capability wouldn't work either, nor would Media Player.
Today I want (NEED!) to make DVD backups of a wedding and nothing -nothing- will burn to the DVD.
The only driver installed is the 'default' windows XP cd driver from 2001. Device manager doesn't ID the drive as a Sony or anything, so I'm thinking of pulling it out to try to read anything that may be written on the drive.
Or do I skip the next tank of gas, wait till next week to backup and just order a new drive from newegg for $40?
What's the deal, and more to the point - what's the fix?

| Find out manufacturer of the drive, then go their website and download a firmware update for the drive. That's more or less the *real* driver for the drive. Also make sure cables are good and secure. |

You shouldn't have to update the driver, but a firmware update probably can't hurt. You might have to pull out the drive to get the right numbers.
You might try this copy of Nero, that might, ahem, work with any drive if you, ahem, use the other file in the archive to get some information for the installer. But only for troubleshooting purposes, and not permanently as we don't want to promote piracy or anything. :p |

XP uses its own device layer, but a lot of burning programs require an ASPI layer to be installed.
Adaptec and Nero both have versions of the ASPI layer available for download. If you can't find them, let me know and I'll look up the links.
Also, in Device Manager, under the controller the drive is on (if IDE, master or slave) make sure DMA is enabled. XP will automatically shut DMA mode off if the drive errors too many times, and a dying drive might have turned it off. If DMA is not enabled, delete the controller the drive is on and restart windows should fix it.
