I bought a 4Gb flashdrive (lots of memory and a good sale). The packaging gives me the impression that the U3 feature would allow a person to put a piece of software on the flashdrive and then run that software on a different computer from the flashdrive. From my point of view, this sounds like a wonderful thing. But, how do I install the software on the flashdrive?

A quick run on google gave me this. Not sure if that's what you're looking for, but I'm sure it's on that site somewhere.

Certain software is bundled on the flash drive itself, including email software which lets you check your email from any internet accessible computer (nice if you are away from your desktop or laptop). There is additional software that can be downloaderd from the website (some free, some for a fee).

From my experience, you can run any app off any removable media as long as it is a stand alone app. In other words, an app that does not need installed or use system files. Heck I have run apps off of floppies, Zip disks and even cds in the past. I think the U3 thing is just a new way of pushing stand alone applications, except it would appear that they have an application to go and link to the applicable programs on the drive in Windows. In the old days you would just run the executable manually.

You can only run apps designed to run on the U3 platform. There aren't a ton of them, and some of the most popular programs are not supported (the programs must be written or re-written for U3 compatibility).

I recently acquired a 4GB flash drive that had U3 installed on it and the first thing I did was remove it. U3 has a site that lists the available programs for the platform. Check it out, it may meet all your needs. I decided to use Mojopac for my portable program needs. It sets up a virtual windows environment and you can install pretty much anything within the environment and run it like you would on a Windows machine. Maybe Mojopac is for you, maybe it's not but it's worth a look. I bought it so that I could run photoshop on it. It works well for me. Just google it and you can check it out. Good luck.

A much better solution is Mojopac.

You only pay once, can run everything, in a different environment from the host PC. Like using 2 pcs at once. Works with usb drives, ipods, external hd etc.

I bought two of them. I really hate the software that came with the stick. All I wanted was memory storage and now these "things" have installed software on several different computers.

I use one with this software and really love the password protection. In case I lose it no one gets my files.

you can also go to Portableapps.com for mostly FREE (legit) software that is designed to run from any usb drive. I have 2 4gb drives that I carry with me always and use firefox and thunderbird on a daily basis at work for "anonymous" surfing and for my personal email accounts...
