From last night... I had the opportunity of working with a wonderful new family. The baby just 16 days old.

And for any who think they might recognize the adults in this picture from my portfolio... yes, I did their wedding invitation last year:

I might add... all of these (excluding the invitation pictures) are straight from Adobe Lightroom with *no* editing. I'm very pleased with what I get out of LR.

All are fine! My choices, 11, 2, 6, and 9 in that order.
2 is actually my pick of the bunch for impact, but 11 includes all of the family.
Lightroom certainly works for you.

These are so great - if it's not asking too much I'd love to know about the lighting on the shots at the top and the group shots. Cleverer people than me could probably work it out for themselves, but I can't.

David, it's what you put into LR that is so special!

Camera left: I used a 30x66" soft box and turned it long ways so that the light wraps around the people and had it down low (about head level, maybe slightly higher).

Behind the camera: I used a small softbox just to add a little more fill light.

Above: I used a 36x20" hairlight softbox with grid inserted to help control the direction of the light (not wanting it to spill onto the background or onto the front of the people). The hair light is also what is responsible for lighting the baby in the images where the dad is holding her. Unfortunately, the baby got fussy when we got to the mom and so not nearly as much care was taken in lighting her poses. I still think I got some nice/natural expressions from mom and baby in spite of the rush.

Got that - thankyou for taking the time. I'm doing the 30 day portrait challenge and I'd like to try some group shots - I will be trying to put this to good use !!

I really like the idea of a *very large* soft box for wrap around light. This 30x66" softbox is brand new, so this was my first experience in using it. I like how well it worked. I probably didn't need the fill light (behind the camera) as I kept the softbox at a diagonal (I was shooting from the very edge of the softbox). I have some more/bigger groups that I'm shooting this week so I'll try the large softbox out again and see how it goes.
