Thanks for taking the time to look. Bought my D50 recently and not too used to all the SLR stuff.. used a 70-300mm lens with macro, pretty much at 300mm in these shots cause I am allergic to bee's. I was sitting there with about 100 of them flying around me. I am wondering how these compare to similar shots. I would love to eventually do some Jacko Macro's. Macro my main interest when it comes to photography. I can take any hard critique, so throw it on me! Thanks!!

I like the one in the middle best. You can really see the fine veins in the bees wings. If macro is your main interest I'd advise getting a 100mm, 150, or 180mm macro lense. The longer the further away you'll be, and you can use a Tele converter on a macro too. Nikon makes excellent macro lenses and Sigma makes fine ones too. You might want to try a tripod too, if you're not already. Keep up the good work.

i'd have to agree with fir3bird and say my favourite is the middle one, I like the soft effect, colours and the detail. My least favourite is the third one.

Middle one for me too, nice sharp detail in the wings. My advice for you (since you're allergic) when doing bee macros... keep an EpiPen with you. My sister is highly allergic to bee stings, and has to keep one at all times with her.

Oh, I absolutely do.. and cell phone. If I get stung more than 3-4 times I will stop breathing before the Epi can work.

Thanks for the comments guys. I thought the 2nd one might be too soft. I liked it best also. I like the eyes in the first one.. I can't wait for the day when I get to do some Jacko Macros! :) Need some New Glass... Currently taking Donations ;) hehe

You could try the reversed normal lens trick.

This was done with a Asahi 55mm f1.8 reversed on my Sony P&S:

This method however will be a problem as your are allergic, as you need to be very close. The front element will be something like 4cm front the plane of focus. It is however much cheaper than a dedicated macro lens.

If you have the money, then you can't go wrong with the Micro-Nikkor 105mm. You could also look at the Micro-Nikkor 200mm, as that will let you be further away.
