My boyfriend just shot what is going to be our company Christmas card. :-) This will be his first professional job, and I'm wondering how much he should charge. Our office manager would have a company tea bag rather than spring for a whole box if she could, so I don't want him getting shorted. Any thoughts?

Same questions everybody else asks: how many people will it go to, how big will it be printed on the cards, how much can your company actually afford to pay, how much is he willing to "cut price" for the chance to be "published", etc etc etc.

You are essentially competing with use of a stock photo. For a ONE-TIME use like with a holiday card, for up to maybe 1000 cards, my instinct says something between $10-50 would be reasonable (it IS a custom, not stock photo), and he should get a photo credit somewhere on the card.

Just make sure to establish a clear licensing arrangement; it would have to cost (a lot) more if they want to re-use it every year, or put it to other uses...or if they want an exclusive license (i.e. he can't use it for anything else except as a self-promotional example).

I suggest you cruise over to Nolo Press; they publish a huge assortment of books on the law for "lay" people, including several on copyright, trademarks, and other artist-related subjects.

You stated that he "just shot" it...for future reference, negotiate price before doing the work. That way there's a lot less room for conflict, disappointment, etc. and you will know how much of your time, effort, etc. to pour into the work also.
