I just purchased the Olympus 500 Evolt digital SLR. Now for the stoopid question:

Can I use the LCD as a preview for a shot like most point and shoot cams or do I have to stick with the eye piece?

No, use the viewfinder.

You have to use the eyepiece. An SLR sends the light that goes through the lens up to the eyepiece where you compose your shot. When you hit the shutter, the mirror that sent the light up towards the eyepiece flips up and the light goes to the sensor (or film for old-school cameras). There are two very special exceptions that i am aware of... the Canon 1D-Mark III and the Canon 20Da both have a live-preview mode. Otherwise, SLR means that you compose it with your eye directly...

The LCD is for two things.

1 - Settings/Info Display

2 - Postview

if you had wanted live-view then you should have gotten the E-330 instead of the E-500.

Or waited for the E-510

I guess that 799 dollars kit with two lenses and a memory card caught his eye.

Thanks for the info! That two lens system was nice. "Live view" does have a draw on the batteries I guess. Does anyone prefer one or the other?

Alot of pro's tend to laugh upon it. The Canon EOS 1D MarkIII will have it and alot of people scoff. ANd soon millions of laughing pro's will be caught using it.

Its best on a model that say has a flipout screen. This replaces the need for right angle viewfinders in tough shot and might even help in studio.

I think olympus has one upcoming model with an adjustable screen im not sure if anyone has a full flipout livew view slr yet.

I hate olympus but you made a decent purchase dont think any bad thoughts of it.
