What're you looking to do with it? I recommend Dell/HP, you can get the bottom of the barrel (perfect for web, email, and office-type applications) for around $500.

Edit and store my photos and stuff is about all. I figure I need at least 1 gig ram and core 2 duo processor. Maybe some online stuff but not much.

BestBuy has a Toshiba with T5200 Core 2 and 1 gig ram for $799.
Also a Gateway with T5200 Core 2 and 2 gig ram for $899.
Both have 15.4 briteview displays and 160 gig HD.

I've had Toshiba's and never had problems with them, until i spilled a glass of wine on it...

If you're not really into the greatest of the great, I would recommend 'refurbished' machines... you can get something pretty hefty for a 'reasonable' price.
