Hi All,

I want to purchase a lens in the range of 24-70mm but must have a constant F2.8, for low light wedding/church type shooting.

The Canon 24-70 F2.8L is out of my price range but I have been eyeing up some alternatives:

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX Aspherical DF for Canon (New - £259)
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro for Canon (New - £279)
Tokina AF 28-70mm f/2.8 ATX Pro-SV for Canon EOS (New - £199)
Tokina AF 28-80mm f/2.8 AT-X 280AF Pro for Canon EOS (New - £309)

Of these lenses, Apart from the small differences in focal length, is there an obvious choice, or a particular one that should be avoided?
The sigma's are quite common on Ebay, but there is a lot of talk about "Front Focusing" probs - should this put me off?

Are there any alternatives?

All input appreciated...

AL.

Go with the Tamron. It's all the rave here at DPC.

I love my Sigma. Great portrait and general usage lens.

I agree with NstiG8tr.. you cannot compile a list of lenses like that and leave off the extremely well-regarded Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di.

Hmm...

I have the 28-300 Tamron and it is very good. I think the less range Tamron cram into the body can only be a good thing for Image quality!

It does have good reviews, though is not too popular on the used market (I will probably be buying used...)

OK, so the only responses so far have recommended lenses that are not on my list! Is this a bad thing?

lol.. no, not really. The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 is pretty well regarded, but you'd probably want to pick up a third-party large lens hood for it, as the one it comes with is woefully small and doesn't really do anything, and the lens has some issues with flare. I don't really know the differences between the DG Macro and the EX Aspherical though, except for the obvious. I'd imagine they're pretty identical in image quality. Sigma is, of course, notorious for iffy quality control.

Tokina's lenses tend to suffer in the area of Chromatic Aberration from what I've read, so you might want to do some more research on that.

From everything I've read and the experiences of other DPCers, the Tamron 28-75 is optically by far the best of the competitors to the Canon 24-70. If you are looking in this range and the Canon 24-70 is out of reach, go for the Tamron.

Sigma 24-70 EX DG Macro f/2.8.
I tested it against the Canon L lens, same features. Not counting a big price difference, I found that on my 20D the Sigma was sharper, better contrast and colors more natural on about 70% of the test shots that I made using both. I still flip-flopped back and forth but went with the Sigma and still very happy 1 1/2 years later.

The Tamron does seem to be the best. Perhaps I'll hold out and see if I can get one... I'm not in a hurry for it at the moment so I have a bit of time.

you must of had a bad canon 24-70! i love mine and when i tested it against others at my camera store. the canon has way better corner sharpness, focusing speed, lens hood, body build, and just general sharpness

I'll back the Tamron all the way for sharpness and color, there wasn't enough difference between the Tamy and the Canon to pay the premium, I tried both before buying.

//www.keh.com (about the only place I shop for used eq) has the Tamy SP 28-75 in Like new condition for $310 US and Like new minus for $299 US, so they do exist in the used market.
