Enjoy your birthday trip, Amy. Remember to keep the camera out of the sand & salt air while you're changing lenses! :)

Try some long exposures on the beach if your there around sunset and into the night, just set your camera on the a tripod and set the camera to as long as it will go before over exposing and have something stationary in the shot. And Happy early birthday Amy :)

We will, of course, need proof that you were there. That means pictures of you and your friend on the beach. :-)

15 sec 1.5 sec 30 sec
So to do shot a like this here is what i do. keep the ISO as low as possibble, I think ISO 200 on the D80. Put the camera in (A)aperture mode start twisting the dial to get a deep depth of field ie high fstop number like 11 or 16. if it is close to sunset or it has just gone down it is easiest. This will give you a couple second exposure atleast and make for smooth water. The other way to do is to put the camera in (S)shutterspeed mode and simply dial in a how many seconds you want, but the sun should be down from the horizon. I find that like 1/5 shutterspeed will give short trails and lots of motion, around 2 seconds still shows the water going back into the ocean but is very smooth. Usually 30 seconds makes all the water smooth. :)

No worries, if the light is coming from the side or back it may be better for the things in the photo. Whatever you do, seriously, dont get up early :D
