I recently received a comment for one of my challenge entries....all it said was "thanks for participating." Huh?? Yeah, that comment really helps me grow...helps me learn...darn bizzare! Interestingly enough, the commenter had never entered a challenge himself! he he!

I've had some weird comments before that, fine, it's their opinion, but I thought the comments were suppose to help somehow. Very frustrating! But really, yours seems to take the cake! And so nice that they can hand out the "comment" but aren't willing to put themself out there to GET the comment. Chicken.

Maybe they meant it was a pleasure to look at your image. Sure, it's along the same line as 'nice shot' but it is a way of indicating that they liked it.

It is probably unrealistic to expect a comment to contain a useful critique, though that would be nice.

By far, your score is the most meaningful comment that you get on your work. When your score is high enough, you don't care much about comments. ;)

Well, this is why the "comment was helpful" button is unticked by default i guess :)

I'd be clicking on that lovely "Report Post/Comment" button. Those comments aren't in the spirit of the site. If you can't be constructive don't be sarcastic. Oh well.

Registered user, signed up on May 7, 2006?

I have one of those also, a couple months back. I marked it helpful. Actually, looking at where the comment is coming from (if it is this person), the comments made are usually quite brief and to the point - sometimes good, sometimes not - rarely mean from what I saw. So...perhaps he was saying he didn't really care for it in a tactful manner? Or hey, maybe he really liked it? Maybe he feels the need to put something down on images he scores low (it is recommended per DPC voting guidelines).

It's this kind of calling people out on their comments that has some people leary of making comments at all anymore (after the challenge is over, how many do you think will go back to see who it is?).

Doesn't bother me either way - just an observation.

At least he didn't post "Good Job Baggie"

I read about that one.

It appears to me that the commenter was "kindly" telling you you choice for the challenge wasn't up to their par or even much less. I'd rather hear that than this really sucks and you should toss your camera off a bridge or something like that. I think that comment says much more that you might think.

Of all the comments that I've received here throught the years, only a very small per cent give anything that can be used to learn from. Sometimes the short nasty comments help the most.

Just my thoughts. Van

Is this kind of comment, which is not insulting in any way imho, really worth complaining about in the forums?
What's next?

Not sure it was meant to be a complaint...just more of a funny off the wall comment, meant to lighten the mood, share similiar bizarre comments received, etc. I didn't say it was "insulting" - just not helpful. Given the range of forem thread topics I have read since joining this site, what's the problem with this one? Didn't drop my expensive camera lens...didn't get a new puppy...didn't discover the meaning of life...just thought it was a strange comment left on one of the challenges! Geezzzz!

The particular commenter left many identical comments at the same time; yes, me too - and at the time I had thought it was meant sarcastically and as such did take an element of offence. If you look at his more recent comments he does seem to be using them more appropriately, which is good to see.

If you want to discourage it, don't mark it helpful.
03/28/2007 06:37:33 PM · #22
My take on this is that it is a comment field not a critique field, If I leave, "wow, great shot 10!" that doesn't "help" the photographer either.
I'm not saying I agree with his comment, but one should be able just to leave a comment and not critique a shot in detail..

In a perfect world everyone would critique your photo and leave constructive criticism for you so that you could improve and learn.

Unfortunately we receive comments like you mentioned... Two of the comments I have received in the past for two different challenges from different people were: "Blah" and "No".

Clearly these people are just making a comment for the sake of making a comment. If they want to enter a 3 or less the site warns them that they are expected to make a comment.

Maybe the solution is to have another check box on each comment beside the "This comment was helpful" one that says "This comment was useless".
