If anyone has the time and interest please pick this pic apart. I shot a ton of pictures (15 - not really a ton, but...) of this byzantine catholic church near my house. This one was my favorite, but I want your take on my edits and or composition. The sun was about 90 degrees to my right - 2 hours before sunset so it was fairly low in the sky. I've been getting back to basics while reading several books and I'm charging myself with the mission to photograph basic objects with natural light aka spheres, cubes, cylinders, etc. I liked this because of the color as well as the combined spherical/cubed elements in it. Included are the unedited and the wider view of where my subject was.

Everyone here is so helpful - thanks in advance! |

Wow, vivid colors!
I think I prefer the sky a little closer to #2 (the 3rd one appears to have a little red in it to me), but regardless, that third image is just awesome! Well done.

Very interesting the different effects you get. #3 is quite dramatic.
I seen a steeple like this and wondered what it was.

I like the lighting of the onion shape tower in "slight edits", and would like to see that combined with the base (the roof under the onion) in "tone mapped".
If I were to just choose one image - my lean is to "slight edit".
Hope that helps!
Cheers! |

Positives:
The post processing, both slight and tonemapped add greatly to the visual impact of this image. The tone mapped version, particularly is visually dramatic. Colors are vibrant and overall technical quality good.
Technicals:
Very good sharpness in all versions. The way you brought out vignetting in the slightly processed version worked to good effect highlighting the dome. The slightly processed image has the best overall technicals.
In the tonemapped version the 'God-like' wide halo between bright and dark areas that seems common with shadow/highlight processing is a defect in my mind though I'm sure there are those that would disagree, especially with an image with a religious theme. There is 'regular' haloing most noticeable around the cross at the top. The slightly processed image has none of that. The way the tone mapped version brought out the drama in the clouds and brightened the detail of the roof is fantastic.
Though there is nothing wrong with center framing an offset framing is worth consideration given the dramatic qualities of the BG sky.
Suggestions:
Don't know if you can avoid the wide haloing from the tonemapping but if you can I'd recommend giving it a try. Once people see enough tonemapped images with those wide halos they eventually get tired of them and see them as distractions. Definitely, fix the 'normal' haloing of the cross in the tonemapped version.
You might try an offset cropped version with more dramatic sky with a lot of dodge and burn it it for effect.

I like the slightly edited one by far. I agree with stdavidson about the halos on the tone mapping one. That completely ruins it for me. That and the other artifacts tone mapping can produce which are odd discolorations and shadows where there shouldn't be any. Yours doesn't have that but I see it often with other photos submitted to the challenges and that just bugs me. As for your image, if you can get the halos under control it may work but for me your slightly edited version certainly was sufficient, IMO.

Thanks for all your replies - I'm realy trying to figure out how to get better scores in the challenges - I love all pictures I post in my portfolio regardless if they are challenges or not, but it would be nice to see a ribbon! I guess I'm also look for your input as to what you would rate this photo had it been a challenge. |

I thought it's a russian church:)
I also like the 2nd one best. how were you able to crop it so much and still have such a good and clear photo?
maybe you can try to combine the buttom part of the tonemapped photo with the slightly edited one? I like how that part looks like on the 3rd photo! it is just maybe a bit too much alone, I think it would be nice together with the 2nd version at 30-50% opavity maybe? |

I too like the second one the best, but as Svetlana said the roof area of the tone mapped version is much nicer. Perhaps some sort of combination of the two, particularly the colours of the tone mapped version would look great without the halos I think. |

I don't think its Russian, but they make damn good perogi's!
Also... the full view was a different picture - the version I edited had a couple pixels cropped. |
