Bob and I
I just got back from spending last week in Southern Utah photographing some of my favorite spots before my wife and I move off to Florida. On the second day of shooting around Moab I was using my D200 and 70-200 2.8 mounted to my tripod with the lens mount to photograph some pictographs. I was working on a cliff ledge that fell away from me to a short 5 foot drop. To get a better angle on the pictographs I decided to climb up one more level so I moved the tripod off to the side where I could reach it and waited a second to see if it was steady, everything OK. I climbed up the ledge and turned around just in time to see the tripod tip over backwards and the D200 hit the sandstone, hard. I jumped off just in time to start chasing the body as it tumbled down the ledge. I finally caught up to it just before it reached the drop-off. I turned around to see the 70-200 still attached to the tripod and staying in one place. On impact the body was ripped off the lens, damaging both the camera and lens. The body had a few battle scars but turned on, the lens seemed only to have damage to the mount, but this is only day 2. Luckily I had my D70 so I could continue on for the rest of the week, but sick to the stomach and without 200 mm.
I called Nikon today and Bob and the lens are now on there way back, but the fix is not going to be cheap and it’s going to take 7 – 10 days. Luckily I have some other equipment so I’m not completely down but this just sucks!

I was almost going to call you out on naming your camera until I read your signature...wait, maybe I still will - you actually NAMED your camera? :P |

After my grandfather(Bob)passed away I used some of my inheritance to purchase the camera. I figured naming it after him was the least I could do.

Hey John,
I seem to remember watching you and your tripod on a sheer cliff at the Green River overlook. Now that ledge was sloped and you were on the slope not two feet from a 20 second skydive freefal for over a thousand feet. SOooooo was there a lesson learned other than the pocket pinch ;). Glad it was only your camera. |

I wasn't that close, someone photoshoped about 10 feet off that ledge to make it look that way :)

| Ouch. I'm cringing and imaging myself in your shoes and I'd be throwing a tantrum about right now. |

| I was there, your shoes were on a 30 degree angle to the drop, I'm sure the pic you showed your wife you photoshopped the edge 10 feet further out ;) |

Where's that icon that says "This thread is useless without pics"? :P

| wow, that's the 2nd $1600 lens down in week (nadiaC's 70-200 also took a fall). Sorry to hear it, hope it gets fixed okay. I'm renting one for a wedding I'm shooting next month, only $35 for the weekend but with a $1400 deposit, so I won't be taking any undue risks with it! :-} |

Hey John, sorry to hear about Bob and his severed appendage (ouch!)
Where in Florida are you and your wife going to and is this a visit or a relocation?
Also, I looked up the list of attendees for next months Red Rock GTG and I was glad to see that you are at the head of that list. See you there. |

Ohmygosh! Man, I remember that sick feeling when my 70-200 fell out of my backpack and broke ... and then, in Moab, my new 5D and 24-70 fell out of the same backpack (and luckily only broke the hood). Well, at least YOU are safe. I'm amazing that you chased after the camera. You're one brave man!

We'll be moving to DeLand, the way I see it you don't have to shovel rain. I'm not to sure about being at the GTG, it's going to be a busy time at work and I'm hoping to be packing boxes like mad.

Oh c'mon now. I hope that you can take a break from packing and make it. We need someone with local knowledge to show us around, besides, after seeing some of the pics in your profile I was hoping even more to see you at the GTG.

Agreed!
I'd crop out most everything left of the door, but this is one fabulous B&W landscape! WOW!

Well I guess breaking Bob's neck is better than breaking your ass-neck. :D
(inside joke kids..)
I think I'm as bummed out as you my friend, when you told me that today on the phone I about shed a tear for you and Bob. I'm just glad it wasn't a worse outcome for both you and the gear.
Oh, and I'm going on the public record by saying that I still thing this move to Florida sucks. But I can't blame you, and know that I totally support you and Mrs. Todd in this next exciting chapter in your lives.
See you in a few days. |

Well I shipped Bob back at the beginning of the week and he arrived on the 28th so I called Nikon today to find out what's up. (After all the guy I talked to on Monday said "Sure we'll have it checked in in a day or two") The answer I got is call back on Tuesday of next week, we are still checking in the stuff from Monday. :(

Well? |
Sorry
No, it is an all (or mostly) metal lens. The mount that slides onto the lens and screws to the tripod is cast metal as well.
