Just curious why color and contrast would be different from lens to lens? I always here people talk about this when asking for lens advice.
(Please remember I am a regular man, so if you can explain it in regular terms I'd appreciate it ;) ) |

Contrast can vary with the grinding and finish quality of the lenses. With a really smooth final finish, and fewer defects and less internal reflections from the lens and barrel will give a higher contrast image. At the extreme end, very low quality superzooms will sometimes give very washed out results at the end of the range. See the long-end Tamron shots here.
As for colour cast, I'm not so sure, but different grades of glass or plastic have slightly different colours to them. The same goes for the finish coatings on the glass - sometimes the front of the lens will have a blue/green/purple look to the reflections on the outside, and this coloured reflectsion means that less of that colour light is going into the lens. I guess this is significant enough to have a small effect on the colour of the shot.

| Contrast reduction is normally due to internal reflection. More elements, less effective coatings, poor design, barrel reflections... all contribute. Differences in color rendition are mainly due to the optical materials used. They are not all perfectly clear. Coatings have little to do with color rendition. Even though the coatings may appear to have a color, they don't necessarily affect transmission of that particular color; think of the Revo brand sunglasses, which look strikingly blue from the front, but are in fact rather neutral when you look through them. |
