Pretty small, feminine hands with nice nails for a guy... though I guess most people didn't see them in the 5 seconds they take to vote.
Thank you to those who DID take the time for a second look :)
First-off, let me say that I have no problem with those who chose to go the humourous route with this challenge. There were some great, fun shots and I enjoyed looking through them.
That said, none of the cross-dressers I've been exposed to do it for fun, but because they identify with the other gender. Becky and I worked on getting her into character, thinking about how a man would sit, stand, even how to hold the cigarette. Even the harsh sunlight was an attempt to add to the gritty masculinity. We didn't disguise her hands, though, and they are definitely female.
Evidently we were a success, and for that my entry bombed. I made the silly mistake of thinking that voters would take a second look, and at least assume, if they still weren't sure, that it must be female, since it was in male dress. Judging by comments and the number of 1's and 2's, many didn't. I know it's not a great shot but it's technically worth more than a ONE.
Next time I'll remember that subtlety doesn't work and we'll stick with the obvious.

At least I got it right. My comment during the challenge -
"Right...those are very pretty hands and manicured nails!"

I think the best shots were an obvious visual dichotomy ... like the 2nd place image, where you just don't expect (or even want!) to see a man in a thong. So the secret was not to hide the identify (and mute the dichotomy), but to make the dichotomy so obvious as to be jarring.

I guess we should have painted her nails then. |

Not to mention the lack of a waistline.
And btw Judi, thanks for your comment on the hands :) |

No worries. As for the waistline...that is non-existant. He has love handles....I had to cover them with the cloth. But he does say in retaliation 'You need a big hammer to drive a big nail!!!!!'

I got it, and I gave at least one extra point to yours and similar shots where a true attempt was made to "inhabit" the other gender. |

it is a good shot but I think you went too far on trying to make it appear to be a woman in mens cloths with whatever you did to the face.
I think this changed it too much for people to really see in the "5 seconds they use to vote". IMO, you ended up taking it beyond crossdressing to almost a sex change. I think if you'd left her face more femine it would have been more obvious that it was indeed a woman and not a guy with nice nails (that apparently weren't seen very well). There were images of women in mens cloths that you had NO problem seeing the crossdressing because they let each element be itself and work together to get the message across.
I really like how dwterry explained it. |

Well I voted it a 5 and did get it, I think the lighting was harsh and I would have liked to see a bit more of the face. However one thing that I do take an issue with is this.
okay I see the nails now. Yeah it's little hard to see up front and I honestly thought that it was a male sitting there. This does look like a male so I'm bumping you from a 1 to a 6. Thanks for the PM, and sorry about the misunderstanding.
This is a comment on your photo. You obviouly contacted the voter during the challenge and persuaded the voter with your thoughts to change their vote. That in itself is against the challenge rules. You arent suppose to reveal your photo to voters during the voting stage.

From the crossdressing scores thread;
"Lowcivicman99
Sony DSC-S75 03/14/2007 07:59:03 PM
You have rated 72 of 72 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 72 of 72 images (100%) in this challenge.
And FYI if I left you a comment that says "DNMC IMO" you are more than welcome to send me a email and explain yourself for a bump up but all my DNMC's I gave a not so good score!"
So yes, I did contact him ON HIS INVITATION. This is a copy of what I sent him;
"I just read the edit to your post. I really do hate pm'ing during a
challenge!
My shot was Street Hockey, with my daughter wearing her boyfriend's
clothes.
I figured her hands were a clear give-away and several others did pick
up on that, but I guess we tried too hard to make her "fit" the
clothes?
Thanks for keeping an open mind :)"
(emphasis mine)

This was yellow ribbon in my opinion - I was shocked to see it didn't get in the top 5 (I did get the blue ribbon right). C'mon... how can anyone think that's a girl???? |

I used to hate the "5 second" mentality of the voters here. I was really upset after a couple of my shots really bombed as no one seemed to get it. Then I noticed that some folk did get it, could appreciate where I was coming from and what I was trying to achieve. So I figured that was cool and now feel happy if one or two people kindly comment and say that they get it and have stopped chasing the scores.
Although it would be great of more folk "got it" :-)
PS: My wife's view is probably closer to the truth as she thinks that my brain works in some strange way and therefore anyone getting what my picture is about is probably on the same planet as me - and it is a small planet for sure. As I will have been married to her for 30 years on April 9 I just know she knows me better than I do! |

Casting aspersions on the majority of the collective is NOT the best way to garner support for your cause. While it does remain true that the image does not merit the lower levels of scoring, it neither merits those upper echelon scores either.
On a personal note, I have no way of knowing that you incorporated the harsh sunlight for a specific purpose and adjusted my score accordingly. I did indeed view this image more than once, as I did all of the images, and deemed it worthy of a 5. Sorry if I offended you, but that in my opinion is what the image warranted. :O)

The fact that it is a girl under there is far from obvious.
It does meet the challenge, I suppose, but there's no emphasis on the "cross dressing" aspect. The nails and hands are not enough to giveaway the fact that someone's bending gender roles here. If I wanted an image that says "Cross Dressing" this one's just not it, sorry. |

personally, I didn't view that as crossdressing because I have hooded sweatshirts and used to play street hockey when I was younger ... I viewed that photo as a tomboy and nothing more ... if she were in a tuxedo or had a shirt and tie on, then I would have seen it as crossdressing ... |

Tomboy, to ME, doesn't equate with cross-dressing. Just my impression; not a dogmatic attitude.
As well, the bottle is being held in a way that disguises the fingernails. They don't look as "pretty" as they probably REALLY do, because the bottle flattens the fingertips, resulting in a bit more confusion. |
