Here's my entry in Time:

This ain't about the score, it's about the shot. I know it was an offbeat time entry, and it's not the most incredible shot.

There are ample examples of really cool match shots on DPC, though.

What makes them so cool? I can see my shot isn't as good, but I'm having trouble putting my finger on why.

The floor is now open for discussion! :)

Too many match photos...

That idea has burnt itself out, IMHO

Perhaps you answered your own question. ;)

True but fire usually scores well on DPC. ;)

I think it's the colours....the orange flame, the blue streaks, the motion implied in the flame, etc. Some examples:

I'm having a heck of a time finding a match photo that's any good, so I can't answer your question right now.

This is my entry for the "match" challenge a while back, getting a good shot of a match burning is pretty hard, so I just gave up and shot a picture of it after it quit flaming.

well here is mine. I think it needs motion, I like smoke as well. and colors can make it better.

Well, based on the examples, you need at least two things if you're going to includ flame:
1) bright colors
2) catch it when the match is igniting, because the flame is much more vibrant and active

The funny thing is that I have some shots of the match igniting. But I lit it using another match. Since flame goes up, I held it below the match that's the image's subject. The result is flame exploding downward from the match head, which just looked wrong.

How did you folks light your matches?

I think it's interesting mostly if the viewer hasn't seen one before.

The first one is "Wow!", the next few are "Neat!", and so on until it's more like, "Oh, another match.".

The cycle starts over for you if it's you making the shots.

Pretty much. Having bright colors applies to any subject frankly. Unless a challenge topic discourages it, the brighter more colorful version tends to win out most of the time assuming all other things are equal. It also helps to know what color combinations work best.

As for the igniting part that's interesting because A.) you don't see a match being lit up close too often if ever and B.) the flame tends to have a much more interesting and uncommon shape to it. In your photo the flame has the most common shape one associates a flame to have. Had you waved your match a little while keeping your technicals good I'm pretty sure you would have scored higher. In short capture what you don't see every day.

where's the blue? gotta have blue in the flame. Yours is also laying down and it looks a bit flaccid. Gotta have a little red head left over to contrast with the blue. LOL Heck, who knows?

Here is my best and only attempt. Talked myself out of submitting it to the Match challenge - Doh! I think action, color, contrast and mood created are some of the factors that make for good flame/match photo's.
