Both of my brothers have been on meth. One is in recovery after a stint in prison and a halfway house. The other is still shooting. The drug has convinced him to give up his marriage, home, job and relationship with his daughters. Now he is squatting with our parents.

He has been very candid with me about it and I doubt that such ads would have affected him. By the time he was introduced to meth he had been smoking pot and using coke for at least 11 years. His judgement was so impaired that he tried meth, despite the fact that his "friends" were/are the worst kind of tweakers.

Edit to add: People seem to believe that they are strong enough to try it just one time. By the time they find out this is a lie, they are hooked.

They need more videos like these, showing real people before and after.

That campaign IMO is very very well done and I hope it scares the shit out of people contemplating trying speed ...

greatandsmall, I am sorry to hear about your brothers. It must be very hard for your family.

I do not think if I was younger those ads would scare me...Remember the "This is your brain on drugs" campaign, where they would scramble an egg? Heck all that made people do was make egg sandwiches when they were high.

And I agree, the actors/models look too pretty.

You have to make meth lame..not bad. Being bad has always held some intrigue for kids, but no one want to be thought of as Un Cool.
Show really cool kids dissing a bunch of lame-o loser meth heads..

My 2 cents :)

Rae-Ann ... that sounds like a HELL of an idea to me ... show kids with half a brain gagging at meth-heads ...

My four children (ages 6-15) have had the unfortunate experience of seeing their 2 teenage cousins destroyed by meth. Real life was much more of a shocker than the ads. Although the actors are not real meth addicts, I believe the ads will affect some people, especially younger kids. If you want to save your kids, start teaching them about drugs at a young age. That's the bottom line.

I don't know where they got these stats or even if they're true but I did see on the news last night that since this campaign started cases of hospitalization due to meth is down around 60% in that state. Of course they can only assume the two things are related.

I have young cousins who would take commercials like this to heart...so I believe the old adage is true, that if it saves just one person it's worth it :-)

I agree that I think these ads would get the younger kids...

But shock value wears thin fast. Here in Canada they put BIG pictures of rotten teeth etc on cigarette packs. When I was still a smoker, these pics did nothing to us! we would make a joke out of it.
I have never heard about stats from the effect of these pics, so I can only assume it had no dramatic affect

Maybe it's time for School House Rock to do a Meth House song. We all remember School House rock... well any kid of the 70's that is :-)

Thanks Rae-Ann. I'm far away and have tried to let it go. The hardest part is knowing that the innocent children have been robbed of a very loving and caring father.

What really kills me is that the main ingredient is manufactured by major pharmaceutical companies who have been grossly irresponsible with the product in their quest for proft. Not to mention how long it has taken our government to acknowledge, let alone address the epidemic.

I wonder what would happen if we were to treat meth as a form of terrorism?
