These may seem a bizarre request, just at a time when the Northeast of the USA has plunged back into the Ice Age, but I'm looking for an air conditioning unit that I can fit in my window. The only problem is that I have bars on the outside of the window, so I don't think any of the 'in-window' versions I've seen on the web so far are going to work, unless I can have them poking out of the window by only a couple of inches.

I was also looking at portable air conditioners, but the reviews online for them have been terrible. Either they break quickly, they're too expensive or they're really loud.

Can anyone offer me some advice as to what I can do?

Maybe an unworkable idea but could you cut the bars in the area of the air conditioner or would that be too much of a security issue?

The quietest option sounds like it would be a mini split air conditioner. Just a small tube runs from the noisy outside compressor to the head unit inside. No practical experience with them but they've installed them in a couple This Old House projects and seem pretty pleased with them.

How about this?

There is at least one model which has a tube to the outside and the machine is on wheels inside. They're not as good as through the window versions but not too base either. Speaking from experience.

I used one like this and I found out that it puts out a lot of heat behind the unit. It's ok if you have it right up against the wall but you still get some heat and we had problems keeping the hose in the window. I didn't like the one we had and took it back to the store.

Have you checked out mini-splits or PTACs?

oops, I see mini-split was already suggested. Sorry.

If you have 14.5 inches of room between bars, a casement style a/c could work.

Hey Samchad, I do HVAC for a living. And the one that pineapple recomended has gotten really good reviews. It does put off quite a bit of heat, but there is another model that is vented to the outside. I will try and find out where you can get this one. But it also is on wheels and if you get the correct tonage for your space needing cooled, it is quite nice. It has insulation around the compressor which helps with the noise. And usually comes with a 5 year warranty. But that is pretty much what your looking at. PTAC's are expensive and a lot of work to install. It is always an option but your looking at about $2,000 to $3,000 installed. I will try and get that info for you about the portable A/C. Hope this helped.

I've seen some security bars that have a sorr of box for the AC unit to go into. If you need security bars, I wouldn't recommend putting half your AC outside of them :-)
