I have done very few B&W's, and am still developing a feeling for them.
I'd appreciate your comments on this one
If you want it for reference, the original color is here
BTW, I got to the B&W via channels.

Jim, I like B&W, however in this photo, I like the color better. The title for your picture is "Cold Autumn Day" and the colored shows the fall colors nicely. When you change to B&W, it loses it's feel and actually looks more like a winter day since the leaves on the tree don't stand out. Also, I like the reflection of color that you see in the water of the colored picture.

Jim, I'm far from any where near being an expert, so take this for what it's worth. This image is very good at depicting what you have entitled it as. "A Cold Autumn Day" As such, the black and white work very well. Although realistic, the original looks cold, but has the warm hues of the foliage and reeds. By the way, I like that one too. I'd play around with contrast, and sharpening a bit, but other than that I wouldn't change it. I like it!

Thanks. I was lucky to catch it (The Yellow Wood) with the sun out and at the right angle. I'm finding Autumn pictures tough to take, as the weather is constantly changing, and while you wait for the proper lighting, a wind can knock down quite a few leaves and change the entire scene.

Agreed! Yellow wood is very pretty! Also like all alone.. (the red leaf on the desaturated (?) pile of leaves.. very striking.
Here are my first attempts at fall photos... This area has not peaked, so I am hoping to go out again.. Any suggestions on what to look for? I am a people person, and would like to strengthen my landscapes.

I really like your #3. It has very nice contrast in lighting
This is what I tend to look for in the fall. It is a great time for lighting contrasts, including shadows. Some of the trees loose their leaves early, leaving holes for the light to create some really nice effects. In addition, the sun is at a lower angle, at least in Minnesota, and there always seems to be some play of light. There are also good opportunities to get color contrasts. I like the reds against the yellows and browns.
