I've just been out playing with my new lens and managed to get a decent snap of the opera house, the first one being the original and the second one is my attempt at basic editing in photoshop (change in color balance from yellow to blue)
In my opinion the second one looks far more interesting and really brings colour to the otherwise dull sky and brings clarity to the opera house itself.
Is the second one the better of the two images?

I really like what you've done with the blue sky, but find the opera house looks bit duller than in the original. Perhaps boost the contrast. Copy the layer and apply the contrast correctionss, and if it blows out the highlights, just erase them away, with eraser opacity and flow set to ~50%.

There seems to be a lot more foreground detail in the yellow one, which is lost in the blue one, but I like the blue one more.

perhaps if i play around with it a bit more i can bring out some of the foreground detail

Here's a mildly tone-mapped version, run through "color match/neutralize" and sharpened with high pass, cropped on left, no other adjustments.

looks pretty good except for some blue areas on the opera house building itself. Is it possible to get rid of these?

Sure, if we are working from the original.
