For a while now it has bugged me that my comments received was higher than my comments marked helpful by a significant amount, and this morning I realized (duh moment) that there's a screen I can browse from where I can sort them out, so since I use the "helpful" box to indicate I've actually READ the comment I sorted for those not marked and set about reading them all and marking them.

Turns out there weren't that many I had missed. By far the majority of the not-marked comments are responses by me, in the comment thread, to someone else's comment and they can't be marked. So I find that vaguely odd: I got about 100 comments "not marked helpful" in my stats, and I can't mark them and clear that field.

This isn't a big deal, but if it's possible to "exempt" comments-made-by-shooter from the total of "comments received" (and thus, by extension, from "comments marked helpful") I think that would be a good thing. Obviously, my "comments received" stat is inflated by about 100 also...

hmm I figured that out allready, yeah.

It doesn't really bother me, actually. why does it bother you?

LOL, if you post something in the comment thread of your own shot, are you talking to your self? If you mark it helpful, are you patting yourself on the back? ;-)
Seriously, it's a good point that entries made by the photographer probably shouldn't count as "comments made" nor as "comments received," in an ideal world.

It doesn't "bother" me, it's just a statistical anomaly. As Kirbic points out, it is as if I'm talking to myself. And there's no reason that comments I make on my own images should count as comments received. It just feels weird :-)

I agree too ... so ... Management? Can you take this as a formal request for looking into the possibility of changing this?

I'm surprised that comments we make on our own images, usually direct replies to the comments of others, are counted in any way at all. I suggest an entirely new category for this. We could call it the "Bear_Music" count. :-)

I agree that comments you leave on your own entries shouldn't count in either total. I mean it's not like you are really leaving them for yourself.

If it's between Bear_Music and Bear_Music, could we refer to it as a "Pas de deux", or would that be a "Faux pas"... :O)

I noticed this a while ago. The best way to avoid this is to:

1. Click on quote
2. Copy the comment your want to reply
3. Click back
4. Go to the details area and click "edit details" and past the comment"
5. Reply under where you pasted the comment.

As seen here

The "helpful comment" box is a misnomer. Its association with the word "helpful" makes it the most misinterpreted tidbit of data collection in all of DPC. It is rarely marked for any other purpose than to indicate it was read by the receiver.

The word "helpful" should be replaced with the word "reviewed". That is less incendiary and reflects how it is really used.

Just read what Bear_Music wrote. His concern isn't that comments he gets are "helpful", his concern is that he marks the box. He does not want to miss incoming comments and does not want others to think their comments have not been reviewed. That is it. He is asking for a change to make it easier for him to find "real" comments so he can mark them. Nothing more or less than that. It is doubtful that Bear_music believes every comment he gets is "helpful".

When discussing how useless and misused I thought this box is with hihosilver she explained that she looks at the stats to tell her she has got new comments that she has not read yet, then she reads them and marks them. Now THAT usage makes sense. She and Bear_Music use the box exactly the same way and have the same problem with it. I suspect most everyone else does to.

So let's call this box what it is, an indicator that the comment has been acknowledged by the reciever and modify the system to make it to be easier for reviewers to find and mark them.

I thought faux pas were that part of a Halloween costume with the furry hands and claws ...

edited cause I'm an idiot and hit POST before actually typing anything...

I agree but maybe we could even take it a step further and ADD a reviewed box and keep the helpful box. There are many comments that I get (like everyone else does) that aren't helpful but if I click it anyway it makes the commenter stats look better when it fact it may have been completly useless. If we add a reviewed it could be another stat so the person knows it was read but not found useful. Just an idea.

Just dropping in to comment that I actually DO consider all comments to be "useful"; I appreciate them all. I'd agree that some are more useful than others, if you want to pick nits, but if YOU make the effort to comment, then *I* think that's useful.
