The biggest prize type thing I ever won was for a skit contest in college.

This sounds small, but it's actually a huge thing on campus. During Mom's Day, there's an event called the Atius-Sachem Mom's Day Sing, for which all the fraternities and sororities on campus (and University of Illinois has the largest Greek system in the country) would pair up and create these 8 minute long musical skits. There are always so many entrants that they hold auditions beforehand just to decide which teams will perform.

Technically, it wasn't limited to the Greeks, but no one else ever entered... until my sophomore year. My residence hall, which had the reputation for being rather "quirky" to put it nicely, decided to enter. And we killed the competition. I was just a cast member for that one.

Then, my junior year, I was put in charge of it. By then, the entire Greek system hated our guts for stealing the thunder in their show, and I was always challenging some stupid rule at the directors' meetings, so I wasn't exactly an ambassador of peace. I wrote it, I choreographed it, I lyricized it (no original music was allowed, but you could change the lyrics of anything you wanted to use), I cast it, I directed it. And once again, we slaughtered the Greek teams. It was quite a heady experience to be standing on stage in sold-out Foellinger Auditorium, accepting the trophy for my skit, listening to the shouting and clapping, and realizing that I created the thing they were going crazy for.

What did I win? Fame and glory, baby, fame and glory. My res hall hasn't entered since, and my name goes down in campus history. Mentioned in a book somewhere. Maybe.

Another time, I won second place in a statewide essay contest. The Lieutenant Governor was the guest of honor at the award luncheon, and when he was standing behind me for the group picture, he kept pulling my hair to watch the curls bounce. That Lieutenant Governor later became Governor George Ryan. He was treated like a hero for about sixty seconds just before his term ended for commuting the sentences of all of Illinois' death row inmates to life in prison, until he was indicted on corruption charges, something to do with drivers licenses and bribery I think.

And I just realized that both of those had a lot to do with writing. But let's face it, I have more photography ribbons than writing awards. ;-)

Hey girl, creative people are creative period. They can do just about anything they put their minds to.

For instance, I love to read, write, draw, photograph, and paint. It all seems to go together when you see the world a little differently than other people :)

ETA: Oh, I almost forgot! I got first place in 4th grade in a lines and shapes drawing contest LOL Gold star for meeeee!!! :)

Becca I have come to the conclusion that I think that you were put on this earth to set up everything for the president of the united states, and write all his speaches. Because who ever is doing it now just isn't good enough.

It's an interesting idea, but I think Mr. Obama has a hell of a speech writer already ;-)

LOL I used insta-pick for both wins, the computer drew my numbers for me. I really don't have much luck.

There was this one time I found this really cool game! And strangely enough I could NOT lose. I kept putting loonies (One dollar coins) into it and I kept winning cans of coke. True story!!

I won £1,000 from a slot machine about 8 years ago. That's $1,700.

On the third spin as well... my wife had just walked away from it having declared it a lost cause.

I did that in Reno a few years back. It was my parent̢۪s 30th wedding anniversary and we all went to Reno, NV for a good time. My dad had been playing the slots all day and night and just before calling it quits he was playing one slot for about 30 minutes just waiting on my mom to get done goofing off with another slot machine. As soon as he started to walk away I had 5 bucks in my hand so I thought Oh well what's $5? After losing $1000 on the entire trip. On the first "Max Bet" I had won over $600 and I was back in the game.

The next night I played the roulette tables and ended up going home with over $3000. I was pretty excited.
