The first picture is the one from the challenge. The second is another I took, but his face is not all clear. Would the second photo have scored better.
Thanks, Jeremy |

IMO, the 2nd one is better. I don't like the tree behind the first one. The blue sky works better for me.
Just my two cents.

agreed, I like the 2nd one ... I like that the blue sky really makes the hawk stand out ... in the first one his coloring blends with the tree a bit too much ... |

thanks for the replies. In general is it bad to have the dark area on his head as it was in the middle of the day and he was turned funny, or is this ok.
Thanks, Jeremy

I C what you are saying, I think in this picture its ok. The capture sometimes can't be perfect. You have to work with what the bird gives you. Or how the bird is on the limb or the sun. Photographer can be tough sometimes. Takeing pictures in the middle of a sunny day is really tough. You will 9 times out of 10 get a highlight/shadow picture. I'm not sure what photo software you have but you might be able to dodge his right side a bit to bring the eye out more.

i actually like the light quite much in the second picture. half his body in the shadow makes the composition more interesting imo. |

I have "dodged" out shadows just as dark with Photoshop. You should give it a try and see how it comes out.
Edit: I just tried to get some of the shadow out and failed !

I definitely like the 2nd better. The lighting didn't bother me at all and the face sharpens quite well even on the small file you posted. Just for kicks I tried a simple crop to get closer to the focal point, pumped up the blue a bit and sharpened. I think some minimal pp on the original full sized file may yield an excellent result. I think this is a great capture.

Thanks guys for all the positive feedback. I will only be here for a limited amount of time this week as we are moving.

The blue version is a lot better. Some shadow/highlight, some cropping, and some vignetting (a matter of taste) makes it better yet:

I also like the second one, but with the cropping and tweeking that Krafty1 did. The full frame just loses the bird in the mess of branches and draws you attention away from the bird.

Thank you guys. I posted the one around the tree because I thought the hawk being in focus was more important. From now on I will go with whatever has more contrast.
