I'm in!
I'm kinda excited about my entry (which usually means it will tank!! LOL) Let's hope not!

Sorry for the confusion and the very late reply, but this is what has been decided by Site Council after much discussion:

both "film grain" and "add noise" are OK for the challenge, but that "grain" under textures is not. Equivalents of these Photoshop tools are also OK.

I already said about conformation about adding noise. Anyway I am also too excited about my entry in the contest & wishing best of luck to all including me :)

I'm in ... and my entry only ended up needing a very mild bit of "artificial noise" using Artistic --> Film Grain (after the resize to 640px diluted most of the image's natural noise) .

Wow - this is going to be a big challenge with so many entries and great images. It's going to be a close contest too. Already 223 submissions with a good 22 hours or so to go. In our home, we have three family members with submissions in this one. Can't wait...!

Agreed - it will be the content that drives this one. Noise will become an incidental in voting 'cos there will be plenty of it.Will be like paging through a vintage magazine:-)

What? I thought you were all going to do the X-dressing challenge and I would be able to ribbon by virtue of the fact that there was only three entries.

=)

I'm going to disagree a little here. I'll be asking two main questions:
1) Is the feel of the picture impacted by the grain?
2) Would this look better without it?

Content is important because not every picture is meant for grain. We will all have our own opinions on that, but I have some general ideas in my mind of what would look good with grain.

I hear you Doc. But see I am a HUGE fan of grain - love it love it love it...bookshelves are lined with 70's B+W photographic books drenched in grain - so for me (I'm guessing) every picture will be just glorious with the grain.

I know that once I've got over my initial enthusiasm, the critic in me will start to ask the same questions as you - absolutely. But I still think that after 300 or so images, the subject will go a long way to scoring a photographer points. I did one shot earlier this week, and put it down (a mercy killing): it had plenty of natural grain (taken on high ISO)and being a vintage object it suited the grain so well. It was just so darn boring that it made me want to cry. Got a pleasing shot two hours later with a subject that notoriously doesn't score well - but hey nothing ventured, nothing gained.

You hit upon one of me three genres. :) I won't share the others in the forum here so as to keep from possibly swaying voters.

I have an outtake I'd love to show you. It is so chunky with grain I knew it would score a 4+, but I still love it and think the grain adds a ton to the shot.

Agree. The point of this challenge IMO is employing noise/grain to effectively *enhance* a subject ... making image content stronger because of the noise. It is not meant to be incidental. Nor do I think noise should simply be added to an image to fit the challenge theme -- i.e., photograph whatever subject then add noise so it fits.

What will be interesting is how much noise/grain voters are expecting. Will grain typical of higher speed film be acceptable, as it's pretty subtle once an image is pared down to 640 pixel resolution on a 72ppi monitor. Or will voters favor really grainy shots, even if over done in the spirit of the challenge?

If the last challenge is an indication, it's going to vary. Goodman's was probably the chunkiest grain in the Top 10:

But then 9th place, on my 1900x1200 monitor has virtually no grain at all:

This time around I'm unleashing and I have far more grain than my last shot which came in 7th.

While I am not going to "vote down" (ie auto vote of 4 or less) shots with light grain, I can tell you that shots with a score of 8-10 (in my voting) will be chunky with grain. We get so little on this site, I may as well reward it while I can.

This is one challenge where I'd like to submit more than one shot. Similar technique for shooting and post but different subjects. I think as Doc and Bob say there are certain subjects that can be enhanced by grain and others that it doesn't work. I think both of my subjects work but I have to wonder which it works better for.

Oh well...I guess thats what the out takes are for.

Here's an example of a shot I thought that didn't work at all. I'm a huge fan of bazz's stuff, and I think Zoe is as cute as all get out, but the shot is totally wrong for grain.

Well after seeing my entry in this contest I hope you will agree with impact added by noise grain. Maybe I am too overexcited.

Most challenging challenge for me so far: testing variables in camera, endless playing in pp. At the end I may have nothing but no regrets.

Man I am gonna get so hammered by the voters. But what the heck! I am in.

Help!

I've got plenty of grain when I view my image in photoshop, but I just submitted my entry and I can't see much of the grain on this site.

Help! (quick)

Add a bit more grain or sharpen a bit after resize.

I really enjoyed doing this one, quite challengeing, as it is not one that we would do often, re having 'grain' or adding 'noise', to our images.
Choosing the right subject matter and composition, will help to get a much better score, IMO.
I am in, and best of luck to everyone.....

I think that I nailed the subject matter, but mine is incredibly grainy in CS but not DPC.

Thanks Cindi, I tried sharpening a little. We'll see.

Ack ... changed my entry at the last minute -- literally at 11:58pm EDT -- from what I'd uploaded last night. Hope it doesn't come back to bite me in the arse. :-O

Don't know if I should use this thread or create a new one.

But do you think that the grain looks forced in many of the shots in this challenge??

I know it is not easy, but many of them look more over-sharpened than grainy, it is just IMHO.

What do you think?
