Anyone know of a Remote trigger for a Nikon D50? Not to trigger flashes but to trigger the shutter? I have a remote for the camera but I have to have a direct sight line to the front of the camera. this is not always feasible. I found microsyncdigital but it doesn't seem to have a cord/receiver for a D50...

I'm basically looking to set it up to catch the birds at the feeders (I have a stubborn Cardinal that I am dying to capture) but I am to the back of the camera and my remote won't work...

Any ideas?

I am pretty sure you will not find exactly what you are looking for, unless something new has come out recently that I have yet to see. I can suggest that you get one of those little dental mirrors and some how mount it to your camera or tri-pod so the mirror is visable to you and very close to the little infered eye on the camera so you can try to bounce the signal into the camera. I know it sounds crazy but it could work.

I was afraid of that....I thought I was close with this microsyncdigital as it can be used to trigger the shutter release....but not for the D50.

what an interesting concept with the mirror...I will have to think about that!!

I actually should have said to use a bike mirror, the kind that clamp on to the handle bars. Then you can clamp it right to your tripod. Also gives you a bigger surface to hit with the remote.

I would use a fiber optic link to trigger the camera if no direct path is available. Use 400 micron or larger fiber, preferably sheathed. If you can get the fiber prepared with st connectors then it is easier to couple the ir beam and not have to be concerned about cleaving and polishing the fiber.

Any recommendations where these can be found?

Edmund Scientific (online) is a good source for optical devices. Their stock varies from time to time but fiber optics are generally available in a large variety.

If you know someone who has some basic electronics skill you could take the IR remote you have apart, tape the LED over the sensor on your D50 and make a longer cord for the switch.

This is the micro sync digitalthat I was talking about....cords not available for the D50 though, but many other Nikons and Canons.

The reason they do not have a cable for the d50 is because the D50 doesn't have a place to put the 10 pin cable. That is one of the limitations of the D-50.

I think the fiber optic would work well too. but the mirror would be much easier to set up.
