I just noticed that my average vote received dropped from around 6.149-ish to 6.1398. This is not a result from an entry but something that just happened out of the blue. Were there some votes thrown out on old entries this week? Anybody else notice this?

maybe this is the thing?
"Voting and comments statistics are now real time. Other statistics above were generated .... "
edit: you got a bad score? :P

Well the only entry I have going is a 6.44 which is well over my average so that can't be it.

Unless the vote "count" is counting towards my average but the values of those votes?

It's definitely real time because it's now at 6.1395 down .0003 since I posted the thread but it still doesn't make sense since the current challenge entry is scoring well over my average so I shouldn't get a net drop but rather an increase from my old average.

The averages in your Statistics box now take into account disqualified entries as well. That might account for the difference you're seeing. |

Ahh ok. That makes sense. So are self DQs going away then?

Ack. That means I have to avoid the profile page all the way through a challenge. :/ |

So a person could get a final vote of 8.5, be disqualified, and still have the votes counted toward their average?

How about this, Richard? Your average on your current entry might be 6.44, but a particular vote might be 5.
Have you had any DQs?
At any rate, I don't understand how past DQs could be reducing your score in real time.
Shrug.

Before my current entry was submitted my average was around 6.149-6.15 and now it's down to a 6.1395 yet my current entry is scoring a 6.44. It doesn't matter if I have gotten a bunch of 1s in the last hour it would still be impossible to LOWER my average when the entry is scoring well above it as a whole.

This has to be it. I do have two self DQs both last minutes including one where the turnover cut short my upload meaning I didn't get the right one into the challenge.
The thing I don't get is why include DQs into the score? Like what dudephil said if the person has a high score and gets DQed it shouldn't improve his stats.
Also, why apply this retroactively? When I made the decision to submit those two entries that I self DQed I did so under the impression that the rules at the time would apply in other words they don't count. Had I known this wouldn't be the case I would have never entered them in the first place.

I think there is a bug in the real-time updating. This morning it said my average was 5.5889 and since then my only in-voting entry has increased in score and now my average is 5.5857
I calculate (in my external spreadsheet) that my average with my current entry should be 5.5982
Teething troubles perhaps?

I'll have to chime in with the opinion that allowing DQs to affect your average score isn't the smartest idea in the book. Isn't the best .. or even a *good* way of controlling how many people self-DQ for low scores either. So now we're rewarding people that get DQd with high scores?
Hrrmm...
Of course, the whole banality behind worrying about averages and scores gets out of hand on the best of days, but this just seems like a little bit of a silly idea. |

That doesn't sound fair, does it?

Yes, if your current entry's score is going up while your total average is going down then there may be an issue. If your current entry's score went down at the same time, then it is entirely plausible. |

No it's mathematically impossible. My overall average BEFORE I submitted my current entry was 6.14 and since then it has dropped to 6.13 despite my current entry scoring a 6.46 as of this post. The "net" effect of my current entry should have a positive effect on my averarge not a negative one. What made it drop is probably those two self DQs I have that's the only thing that would make sense.

Don't forget the whole DQ images counting now though.
Edit: Oops, yep you got it in your last sentence.

OK, it is broken. Since my last post I have got 2 votes both of which are above my average and now it says my average has dropped by 0.001 to 5.5847

Hm, I agree, this does not sount fair. I have had a self dq picture, asked for the dq as soon as I woke up and saw the other pictures in the challenge - discovered that I had totally misunderstood the challenge... I had only received around 10 votes by then, if I would have waited for a few days, maybe the score would have raised a little, which would give a littlebit different score... As for now, my score dropped from 5,92 this morning to 5,89xx now???
So I ask also, what about if you get dq with a picture with really high score, will that also count???

After seeing this thread, Ijust had to check. And, yes, my average score has plunged, plunged (!) I say, from 5.4288 all the way down to 5.4283! Yes, sadly there was one self-DQ in my history - fummble-fingered Alice stuck a landscape in the portrait challenge and pulled it out - alas, too late.
I guess the moral of the story is: A rising tide rocks all boats!
And, while I know some of the math wizards take statistics very seriously, I guess it for me, it's just an amusing curiosity. |

Right, I think you'll find that what is happening is that when a vote comes in the number of votes in increased by one but the value of the vote is not added to the total. To use my stats as an example...
After 10,683 votes received my average was reported as 5.5847
After 10,685 votes received my average was reported as 5.5837
(10,683 * 5.5847) / 10,685 = 5.5837
The calculation should of course be (assuming my two new votes are 6's):
((10,683 * 5.5847) + 6 + 6) / 10,685 = 5.5848
I'm was a math's major at Uni so I find this stuff "fun" in a geeky sort of way ;)
EDIT: because I wasn't an English major and the grammar was wrong :(

I think you're right. The average just keeps going down regardless if the vote cast was a 1 or a 10.

Not down, just toward the 5.5 average -- a person with an average below 5.5 will see theirs gradually go up.

If a person votes on less than 20% of the images, their votes becomes null and void. So if your image was one of the few they voted on, then this would affect the outcome. Unfortunately, this isn't determined til the end of a challenge. Least, that would be my guess.
