I'm guessing from the style of the ad that it was 70's maybe early 80's :-)
Ooops, I was a little off... that was around 1965.

Don't forget the Zeiss 1700mm.
The canon weighs 220lbs(100kg) the Zeiss weights 564lbs(256kg) |

f/14 with a 2x converter what's that f/19? Better use a remote, mirror lockup and hope the wind doesn't blow at all. LOL

With and FD mount, quite useless for EOS.

the ad is a bit misleading. isn't any lens capable of photographing something 18-32 miles away? picture a mountain. or an ocean horizon...
anywas - i've got an FD mount canon slr - so i'll probably try to find one of these babies... ;}

it's a mirror lens - i don't think L grade optics would apply to a mirror lens?

I am not quite sure I call the Canon a lens. Sure it's an FD mount but I think of it more as a telescope especially as it's a mirror based lens.
Having used the 500mm mirror based lens I question whether that 5200mm could compete with a modern 600mm Canon IS lens. I know that my 70-200mm f/2.8 can resolve substantially more detail than my 500mm mirror lens (2.5x). I wouldn't doubt that even though it's 10x the magnification of a new 600mm lens. The latter would garner more detail.
(I could of course be mistaken.)
That said...the 1700 Carl Zeiss...now that's impressive. How much nature is in Quatar?
(However, the Carl Zeiss lens more approaches a device with more similarities to such used on naval ships for tracking or astronomical use.)
