The past few days, since I have had an entry in a current challenge, I have gotten numerous comments. Each time I receive one, when I notice it, I check the 'helpful' box. However, when I come back to the site later, the 'helpful' box(es) I just checked are unchecked. I check them again and move on and again, I come back later and the last one or two are unchecked. Is there a problem with the site or am I doing something wrong or am I just crazy thinking I checked something I didn't...repeatedly? |

I'm gonna vote for the crazy theory ;-)
Usually a box will get unchecked if someone changes their vote or changes the comment.

For certain if the author edits the comment, the box will become unchecked. |

Well, it just happened again and the comment was not changed. The comment was added @ 9:18, one word. I checked the box @ 9:22. I just checked the comments, the same word but box is unchecked. |

Ok, now - at the time of this post - I get a little red ERR to the left of the box and when I go back to the page, the box is again UNCHECKED.
NOTE: I don't have the means with this system to capture the screen and upload a pic. |

I've had the same problem. I bounce around from the view of all comments into specific pics and back, and sometimes the system doesn't remember that I checked boxes.

Uh oh, me thinks some of the members may be waking up and realizing the Matrix isn't real.

There is no matrix.
And these aren't the droids you're looking for.

Here is a question... does it really matter if the box remains checked or not?
All you and most people do is check it to indicate you've seen it. Nothing more, nothing less. That is true for me and just about everyone. It is either checked habibitually or it is not. Beyond that there the box has no real significance.
Yet this basically meaningless box generates little more than complaints from people who feel their comments are unappreciated when theirs are NOT marked. Then they start discussions to complain. What purpose does that serve? None that improves anyone's photography, that is for sure.
That box is the most useless piece of data recorded at DPC and results in some of the most complaints. It should be removed.

Actually, no. I do a lot more than 'check it...' Comments mean a lot to me - good, bad or indifferent. I read my comments, apply changes (off site of course), review/experiment with ideas, etc. Even the one word ones...someone says 'great' I look at the pic and try and figure out what they see or is appealing to them (look at profile, style of pics, avg. vote given/rcvd., favorites selected - photographer and photographs) Someone says 'not to my taste' and I look at it and try and see what they may see as unappealing.
I fail in a lot of respects as far as what the DPC community expects and what I enter (current challenge entry attests to that.) But the comments I have received, each and every one of them, has helped me to better understand where I am as a 'photographer' as well as where my personal perspective is.
NOTE: I have read this many times before hitting the 'post' button. I tried to express my opinion the best I could and in no way mean this as an attack or negative response to Steve's post. He just happen to post the 'trigger.' I pulled it. |

Don't misinterpret. I'm not saing the comments you get are not helpful... I'm just saying that marking the 'helpful' checkbox is meaningless.
I checked, you do exactly what I do, you habitually mark each and every comment as 'helpful'.
I'm guessing that, like most everyone at this site, you and I mark the checkbox more or less to mean we read the comment, not necessarily that each and every comment we get is particularly helpful.

I don't know how you checked the meaningfulness of my actions or my habits and you guessed wrong. Apparently you did not read my post or thought I was talking (typing) out of the side of my head. |
