Looks very neat, a 14Mp APS sensor packed into a P&S body. But it has a fixed 28mm f/4 lens (I assume with 14Mp the digital zoom will suffice).

Here's the press release

The 14MPx is in "Foveon-speak." It's 14M if you count all the red + green + blue sites. In real terms, it's 4.7M RGB pixels. it will act like more than a 5MPx camera, because it is sampling all three colors at each site. Picture quality will prolly be more like a 7 or 8MPx camera.

I have been promoting this idea for three years now at dpreview. Finally a manufacturer stood up and made one. Wonder if more will follow.

It looks very interesting, I will certainly look into it. The only thing I don't like is the f/4 aperture, imo it should be at least f/2.8, but that also depends on the sharpness and contrast @ f/4.

But with dedicated photosites for R, G and B it should give much better tonal range than a standard 5Mp sensor, shouldn't it?

Also remember that a larger sensor will allow much less noise at higher ISOs. So instead of worrying about opening the aperture to f/2.8, leave it at f/4 and just up the ISO to 1600 instead... ;-)

hmm... Thanks for that.

I'll just drop Sigma an email telling them to dump it. :p

In theory it really should, since there's far more actual data compared to bayer interpolated sensors. In reality, the results have been good but not spectacular with the Foveon sensors. It's likely to provide really very good photographic results, but not what you'd expect from a 14MPx camera; certainly not 1Ds MkII or 5D-like.

Yes, but I am already used to a large sensor with an f/1.4 lens as the main weapon. f/4 is considerably stopped down in relation to that.

No, please - Give me just one more chance. I'm determined to get my sales commission from Sigma this week. I've got a wife and family to feed.

I'm excited about this camera. Hopefully the price will be right and it'll put out good files, and if so I'll be going back to digital (at least to get one of these)
