I finally got around to sending in a submission. I think about 60 shots. It certainly isn't painful, but it was definitely a test to break the usual habit of uploading.

Hopefully Alamy is on top of the upload system. I'm certainly looking forward to the notification of its launch.

DoctorNick ... congratulations on getting your photos in. How did you determine which of your photos would be "L" and which ones would be "RF"? What was the logic? Thanks for the help!

Hi again, more newbie questions...be gentle with me :-)...and I just don't have the time to read 48 pages of thread!

If Alamy rejects pix do they tell you which ones, and why?

Every photo that is rejected, ever, Alamy has a section on the web site that shows the reason. I've been impressed with that part of their communication.

While I'm not DrNick, I'll share my thoughts on this.

If an image is pretty run of the mill, and object or a place that could be from anywhere, with nothing that really makes it special to me or (I think) to buyers, I go RF.

If I have a model release on an image, or I think it's special and a buyer would want exclusivity to that image because it is special in some way, it's an L. Model release just because I like to tell my models where the photo is being used - I don't pay them so they appreciate being appreciated.

I got an email or read on their blog that the average price per sale on L is less than average price per sale on RF. This has not been my experience - my L images have outperformed my RF images by about 3:1.

FWIW...

Phew! Finally sold one... not for much at all as it's only for an inflight magazine, half page size, for one month only... but it's a sale. And it's one of the stronger images of those I've loaded...
04/03/2007 04:28:58 PM · #1186
Congrats! Can you post a link? Would love to see it!
04/03/2007 05:03:00 PM · #1187
I don't know how to do a link but it's image ID is AJBFK4 which you can enter into the search box.

I think it's one of my better ones but that said, I prefer others ones in that same series of portraits... but perhaps this one fit with their page layout or had the right amount of space for text to be added or such.

I really like your collection. I especially liked the elephants and the woven fabric of women in traditional hats.
Congrats again on your sale.

Congrats!

Horeca, A7N7G7 looks like it has sensor dust in it - or are those birds?

Did you really sell an image with sensor dust? That's the question.

Maybe I'm working to hard on my submittals!

Congrats to both of you - it's pretty fun to sell them, isn't it?

digitalKnight, you can never work to hard on your images. It would amaze you on what the page designer will do to 'clean' up an image if it meets the criteria. The better quality your image is, the less likely they will move on to an image that wont require as much work on their part.

Horeca, When a photo researcher is looking to illustrate a subject, sometimes average is exactly what they want/need.
Stock photography is a totally different beast then trying to win ribbons at dpc. On Photographers Direct, its not usually the highest scoring images that make the most sales. Some of the most 'average' shots get sold over and over and over again! The best 'average' shots of exotic locations do the best. Yours happen to be Italy and Warsaw.

Usually, the sales tend to build up the more images you have uploaded. So to get sales below 1000 images is, imo, doing very well! Great Job!

Brookied, Good Luck to you! Can't wait to see your collection!

digitalknight - nope - it's not a dust :) it was taken long time ago with my ooold nikon 8700 - no chance of dust - those are the birds.

tlemetry - the quantity makes... money :) that's why i'm going to spend some time on my thousands of pics from italy, portugal, egypt, poland and twice as much pics of music artists...

well Alamy just updated and have my collection, Not bad 3 days, so how long to rate my images, I really think these will fail but at least it gives me a yard arm as to why so i can correct the next CD

For well over two years I've been thinking of sending stuff in. Now I've no idea what to send at all.. Any hints or tips?
Like a lot of people, I shoot mainly landscapes.. not exactly big sellers. I do shoot studio stuff, but wouldn't put that in without the models permission (even though I have releases)..
04/19/2007 03:11:57 PM · #1198
well they had the DVD for a while now and have just put up that there is 10 images. So i am hoping it is not too long before i know if they get rejected or passed?

I still think this batch will fail but i have my next lot ready

Hey there, I am getting ready to send a CD to Alamy to get accepted..

However i use a canon eos d30 (3mp) and i use photoshop to upsize my images.. Now I'm just wondering if the quality will be high enough for them to accept my first batch or am i better off waiting until i get my 5d in a couple months?
Here's a 100% crop of an image i will (probably) be sending to Alamy so you all could see.. Is it worth trying to get accepted?

Thanks in advance for looking and feedback! 100% crop

They recommend starting with a minimum of 6MP before upsizing. I sent in some upsized 3MP images which were not accepted -- I'd suggest waiting if you know you are upgrading cameras anyway, especially since it will probably be the newer camera you use for most future submissions.

Save the 3MP images for microstock if you're inclined to go that way, or just try to sell them as prints.
