Is there a free raw converter that you can suggest, i was using rawshooters with the 350 but the 400 wont recognize it. I apologise if this has been covered already

Unfortunately support for RSE went bye bye. There are a few others, but I don't have any expereince with them.

However, DPP that came with your Rebel XTi isn't shabby.

i am really dissapointed that RSE is gone. I liked it alot. Finding DPP too hard to use

I used DPP that came with my XTi for awhile as well.

Now I use the Adobe Raw Converter (via PSE 5.0). There's a beta version (v3.6 I think) of the converter that you can download from Adobe that supports the XTi.

Version 3.6 is the current release.

Lentil as far as a link goes just goto Adobe.com or google Adobe Camera Raw.

My 400D came with a copy of Paint Shop Pro 9. I haven't opened it but I am under the impression it has a RAW converter.

Unless it came from Canon with PSP 9 then id just plain doubt it necesarily has the ability to open the 400D's files specifically. PSP9 does have a Raw converter.

Companies are known to package stuff after they get it from the manufacturer and it not even be compatible.

It was inside the sealed box when I bought it. It looks like and OEM version. No box or manual, just a small CD in a soft case.

You should be able to use 3.5 for CS. I mean literally if you wanted to get an update for Adobe CS, where would you go? I would goto Adobe.com goto Support and Do a search on adobe camera raw. The newest version will appear at the top of the page.

You should be able to find the older versions at the lower end of the page.

I could link you but honestly im not doing the work for you. Google works wonders. If you think im an ahole... sorry and good at the same time. (Checks inbox for mail from SC)

That was genuine follow those instructions YOU WILL find every avaliable version of ACR that works on 7 CS and CS2. CS2 Supports 3.6 (EDIT - 3.7 now) I think CS has to use 3.5 which may or may not support the 400.

I wonder if CS can ready DNG files with a plugin? If so then thats simple as downloading the DNG stand alone converter.

GOOGLE millions of people use it.

//www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Adobe+Camera+Raw+for+CS

First Link goes right to the page that has a link to every Camera Raw Update and Basicly all Adobe Downloads.

The search term was "Adobe Camera Raw for CS"

I don't know offhand which version of Adobe Camera Raw started supporting the XTi, but I'm almost sure that whichever it was (probably 3.6) will not work on CS. I believe that the last one that worked on CS was 2.4.
It might be worth taking a look at an upgrade to CS3 come Spring (April release maybe?) and muddle through with DPP for now.
The Adobe converter is much improved in v 4.0, and I think you'd like the added functionality. I don't know if the beta version of CS3 is still available for download, but if so you could try that out, should keep you going until the release comes out. The CS3 beta is what I've been using daily since about December.

UPDATE - Bad news 2.4 is the last for CS......
EDIT - 12 seconds too late?

CS3 Beta requires the user to have a Valid CS2 Key, to get a CS3 Key.

Doesn't look like Picasa is supporting the 400D now either. :-(

Right you are, just checked and you can install and run the beta without, but only for a ridiculous two-day trial period (!!). Well, they aren't courting customers that way :-P
I guess when you're the 800 pound gorilla, you don't need to court anyone.

DPP is easy to use, just not intuitve to get started with. Canon has tutorials at //www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=HomePageAct

specific link //www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=386
